I want to chop my 31 5w coupe and I'm thinking the process through, but I have no idea how to deal with (getting short gl*** or refitting)the gl*** after chopping. Can most auto gl*** shops handle this?
Who or what is the answer?

  2. If its a early car most of the gl*** is flat and any gl*** shop should be able to make it for you. What car is it?

    You've got it easy!
    All your gl*** is flat.

I stopped by 2 gl*** shops here in BFE northern colorado, both of them can cut flat laminated gl***. I made templates from plastic sheets, and I will take them in for gl***.

Side note, last year I replaced the windshield in my 68 jeepster.
$58 to "copy" the old one....

If you can't figure out how to get gl***, you might want to re-think chopping a top.

If you can't figure out how to help, you may want to re-think posting in this thread!

  9. If you already have gl*** in the car you can get it cut down. The gl*** in the doors can be left alone because it rolls up and down. If you do have gl*** in the doors make sure you remove it before welding near it because the welding sparks can melt into it.

Use Masonite for the gl*** (or 1/4" plywood)...it's about the same width as laminated gl***...and it's more rigid than cardboard...so you can actually mount in on your tracks and roll it up and down, make sure it all works/fits before you spend money for see-thru stuff...!!!

Here's a guy that's asking questions, trying to learn and both of you guys give him some stupid answer...neither of you are into helping anyone LEARN, is that it...???

And just because Flt Blk has been on here 8 years is no reason to disrepect someone that's trying to learn...he asked a simple question and there's no reason to give him **** about trying to learn. I'd bet even Flt Blk had to ask questions many times as well...and so have I...lighten up.

Unfortunately Ed, I don't see anywhere in your post, OR FltBlk's, where that particular question was asked...

40 stude dude hit it on the head. Thin plywood makes s great templet. Flat gl*** shouldn't give you much problem.

nothing wrong with asking questions! better than screwing up a model a, then asking the questions!! an A is pretty strait forward chop, shouldnt have to many issues and if you do ask away!.. i use 1/4" masonite when i do my templates, bevel the edge just like the gl*** and it will run smoother when your test fitting it in the channels.

Like zombiesnys said the door gl*** will work, 1/4 gl*** make a pattern from the orginal gl*** then make it what the chop is shorter, the back gl*** shouldn't be a problem. Take the windshield frame to the gl*** shop have them fit it.

Some interesting posts regarding a new guy asking a "dumb" question and then tearing him down for it. I have been into this insanity for over fifty years. I'll admit that I shake my head when I read some of these posts. But, before I make a smart *** remark, I remember my youth. LOTS of dumb "questions" and stupid ideas. I was very lucky to hang around with a group of older guys that never make fun of me or my lack of knowledge. We were ALL dumb ****s at one time. Let's try to act like we are Keepers of the Trust and that we want to p*** on our knowledge to the next generation.

just a word of caution, is the gl*** tempered or laminated?, big difference!
all the newer gl*** is laminated, easy to cut to size.
old tempered gl*** will most times shatter when cut. it also yellows with age.
most times people replace with the laminated type, it is a little thinner though:cool:

  23. You got to forgive flt-blk he hasn't made it into this century and still thinks that honesty is the best policy.

Yes any auto gl*** place can cut the gl*** for you. I actually know a guy that brings them the whole body once its done and lets the gl*** guy figure it out for him. It doesn't cost him any more and he never ends up with a piece of gl*** that doesn't fit.

  24. I agree 100% . I don't care how many posts or how old you are, it was a legitimate question and deserves a legitimate answer. Some of the posts aren't answers but 3rd grade rhetoric which should not be posted on here.I guess it does matter how old you are to a point!! The HAMB is the best site bar none, but to read some of the insults that people post makes no sense to me.
    So to answer the question.........

Flat gl*** is easy for any gl*** shop to cut. Use Laminated gl***. Tempered gl*** cannot be cut but if you wanted the sides tempered, you start with plain plate gl*** and then cut it, then they fire it and temper it. Once its tempered, you can no longer cut it. A template out of a hard material will always be the best bet for bringing to your local gl*** shop. I would try a commercial gl*** shop as they deal with lots of laminated gl*** and custom cuts.

Probably the wrong way but I made templates of the original height windows, flat windshield 49 Merc, & flat side windows, then cut 4.5" ( what I wanted to lower it to ) out of the center (horizontal) and made "chopped" templates out of 1/4" wood I had laying around and used these templates when welding up the roof and then took them to the local gl*** shop.
Back curved window I didn't touch just layed it down.
It seemed to help me getting everything welded up in sort of the proper position so the windows would fit and roll up and down.

  26. I don't know if that is the wrong way just a different way. Decide what you want the window to look like then make the orifice fit it.

I got a sedan with a split back gl*** that I am getting ready to chop and have been trying to decide the best way to go about it. I may try that approach myself.
