I need to know what the best material is to make a shift knob out of. I thought about wood, but it doesn't fit the style of the project I'm making. I'm thinking something like acrylic or resin, but I'm not sure where to buy what I need. What are your thoughts?
Several years back I used polyester resin to cast skull shifters. Was even able to tint the resin in different colors.
ive seen them made out of layers of different colored acrylic that looked cool. somewhere on here theres a diy about it
I am in the same boat. I have messed with an old lawn mower piston. It seems to be working ok. I think resin of some sort might be a good way to go. I also have messed with gluing layers of color plastic sheets together and then sanding them down. Very tedious and time consuming.Good luck! Stan
Where would I get the resin? Maybe like a hobby shop? I might end up going with a high density wood, but I really don't want to.
I think it depends on what you want it to look like.My first thought would be to carve one from aluminum(for a simple shape). Are you going to paint it or ?????
There is a company here in PA called Smooth-On that makes casting products and resins. But, I'll be watchin' you thread for more info. Smokey

The crafts teacher who I just happened to buy my 51 Merc from taught his students how to build laminated knobs out of acrylic . I didn't take his cl*** but a lot of my friends made some pretty nice dash and shift knobs for their cars in that cl***.
mine is cast out of good old bondo or light weight filler if you don't like to use the word bondo so far holding up
I want one that looks like the old style mushroom tops that they put on the old style Swan shifters. I want it to be black or even clear with an old Ford emblem on top that is cast into the resin so that it never wears out.
