As I get older, I find I smash myself up a lot less. But one thing that is a killer is working when your tired. I always find that is when I run my knuckle into the grinding wheel, or pick up a piece of hot metal without gloves. As I get older, I have to pay more attention to knowing when to call it a day.

Me, too! At my age, and having wrenched and hammered on stuff all my life, I can comiserate with you all. Right now, in this nice cold wintertime, my cuticles and knuckles are all chapped and cracked and bleed a lot. I have gloves all over the place, and I do wear them when I don't forget, or ingnore them. I suppose it's just part of being who and what we are. ;)

Being a mechanic for better than 30 years you do earn some battle scars, just be careful. Gloves are not practical for my jobs so I don't use them.

Gloves are dangerous. A very high percentage of the industrial accidents I have seen, were due partially to the operator wearing gloves.

You don't get enough feed back and willingly put your self in more danger than necessary, when wearing gloves.

I've worked on car 40+yrs and probably smashed as many knuckles as everyone else here. The one thing I dont do is wear gloves. When I first started all the old guys never wore gloves. I just look at the kids now with thier gloves on and shake my head. Wearing gloves while working is like f**cking with a rubber.

  13. OK lets change the rules- for every negative post you have to post two positive posts!

Where are the monitors when you need them.

I think this tread has to be worse than the senior center. According to my 90 year old neighbor. She said there were a couple of old ladies that if they did not have the biggest health issues at the table, they knew somebody that had a lot bigger health issues.

Looks like you own at least 4 positive posts on this thread! (G)

    (2) She only drinks hard stuff-no beer
    (3) She does not need glasses.
    (4) The sun is shining today.

There are four positives Larry. I like your signature. I was not sure if you meant own or owe. I was not taking a chance misreading your post wrong.

OK, you guys are starting to scare me.

I keep hearing you say you are getting old and talking about age and such. Sure these things are going to happen just like a fart in an elevator, but don't admit to it.

I get senior citizens discounts now, but don't take any pills unless I happen to remember my Flintstone vitamin after breakfast in the morning.

Please try to ignore this age thing and do something to take your mind off of it. I won't go to any of my high school reunions because I don't recognize the old farts anymore.

Main thing is don't get pissed at yourself and do the best you can with what you have. I refuse to use the term gray hair. For me, it's chrome!

Just read a thread where one of our Hamb members just lost his Dad at 84. He worked on his rod right up to that point, and I want you all to be able to do the same.........

Be careful when you work. Super glue the broken skin back together when it happens and keep going.

MERRY CHRISTMAS and look for band aids in your stocking......

  19. Jeez, I think this post has gotten out of hand. The kind of work I had to do on the car was just hard to do for a week, thats all. I thought it funny I jumped up and down like a little kid because it hurt like crazy, this isn't the first or the worst nor my last, I won't quit workin on cars because of older age. I was just making an observation as I get older my dexterity and stamina are not like they used to be, it seems like it happened overnight and that is the frustrating part, so I have to slow down and pace myself, thats all. And STURGIS39, your day will come.

    Rrumbler,

I like how you put it. I work with my hands every day and they do take a beating. I never liked gloves but they sure come in handy especially when working with greasy or heavy items.

My fingers crack and bleed from the dry, cold weather also. Usually at night I put Vasoline on my hands and cover them with an old pair of socks. They feel great in the morning.

What's important is admiring what you have accomplished by the end of day, whether it is at work or building your hot rod - your skills and your hands did it.

Exactly. Those 2am marathon sessions are a thing of the past. Once I got frostbite on my toes installing fresh motor outside in a blizzard. Just HAD to hear it run before I quit. I dont do that kind of crap anymore.

Hehehehe..I SO wanted to respond because I have SO many funny azz stories. My ex calls me (Tim,the toolmans twin..) and SWEARS I wasnt allowed in the garage unless I had me cell so I could call for help.I used to work in an alignment/front end shop for 17 years and we had one of those older alignment machines..you slide the sleds back and forth to get them in the best place to raise the car.Now those being BLACK and you work with NO light what so ever under the lift, can you imagine how many times I KNOCKED myself on my azz..?!?!? Or better yet..KNOCKED out..?!?!?!A customer saw me laying there and told my boss.."Uh,I think the alignment is out cold..".Oh,hes ok,give him a few minutes.LMAO...Heres a NICE cut WITH thick welders gloves on too...Why do you ALWAYS manage to hit yourself when its REALLY cold outside..?

Grinding welds on my new floorboards that I just welded on my 54 150, the grinder kicked up and bit the index finger on my left hand. It bled profusely so I called the better half and asked where I could go for some stiches. she replied that if I thought it needed stiches that must be bad. Well 7 stiches later and a tetnas shot I left the trama center $515 poorer. I've been a Aircraft Tech and Auto mechanic all my 70 years and all I can say is saftey goggles and gloves and all saftey proceedures in place you can still get hurt. I love this thread! I thought I was the only one who got a wire wheel tangled up in his t shirt or put a grinding disc through his glove into his finger. Oh yea the push the disc brake out with air into you finger, lollypop finger move. The wire brush wire stuck in my eyeball was cute along with the wrench slip into "surgical stainless" fan blade stitches.
You guys make me feel "normal", Merry Christmas!!!!

Working at a monument company we'd use DISTILLED turpentine to coat the face of the stone to tool it.
The old guy that taught me told me to dip my hands into the pan of turpentine and they wouldn't get sore or numb from the pneumatic hammer.
    It works!
Takes the soreness right out if you smack the tip of your finger and blacken the nail too.
We didn't use gloves as your hands would slip from whatever you were handling.

Just don't use the turp if you have broken or bloodied skin.
I can't speak on the absorption problems, but,so far I don't have any difficulty with anything...
