Does anyone make a good undercoat anymore?
seems the stuff they sell in the auto parts store is rubberized ****..

My 55 is fully undercoated with some type of oil/tar based coating that is tough as nails... I literally had to chisel it off in places...
I know it was applied sometime in the early 70's

it has kept the floorboards, rockers and inner fenders rust free.

I just added a recessed firewall and tunnel, so I'd like to goop it up good with a quality coating.... I'd prefer a rattle can...

hell, if I can't find anything... I was thinking of using actual roofing tar... :D

I use raptor bed liner. It comes in a kit that has 4 liters jars and hardner and a gun for 99.00 thru tpi tools. the stuff work great and has a uniform finish .You said you prefer rattle cans but if you have a compressor its very easy to use.It has good coverage 1 kit will do the complete underside of an average car.

The original stuff was good, but you would be surprised how easy a lot of that will flake off. I had a bunch on my 57 and it was like a scab, you just can't stop picking at it. Make sure all the loose stuff comes off before you coat over any of it.

Maybe if you're doing a firewall and tunnel you should try a Lizard Skin or Cool Car Ceramic type product that is designed to block out heat and sound.

3m Body Schutz. It requires a special gun but is not all that expensive. Comes in quarts.

that raptor bedliner sounds like a killer deal I paid $35 for my bedliner gun alone off ebay, and the lizard skin gun is $130 ish.

I used homemade lizardskin on the underside and engine compartment of my car. You really need 6 to 8 coats to get the credit card thickness of material to get the results. I just had some extra and felt like shooting it, but for real results I'd use bedliner i think. I want something thick and heavy to help control noise and maybe be a bit durable.

there's also this roofing stuff? I think from lowes that has microspheres in it already but I think it's white, gotta tint it.

I like the 3M rubberized stuff in the big spray bombs. Many moons ago a friend used a similar sized spray can of NOT 3M that was tar or petroleum based and his car caught fire around where the muffler ran close to the belly pan. He swears he didn't get any on the muffler, but... it's hard to prove that after the fire truck arrives. Gary
