I have a MII with power rack and pinion going into my project. I was just wondering what you guys are using as far as p/s pumps. Who is using an OEM pump and who's using aftermarket Saginaw pumps. I have a 401 Nailhead going in my project if thats any help.

  2. I'm using a GM pump off a Mercruiser Marine 350 (Chevy) mounted to my 350 small block attached to an Isuzu gear. Had the local NAPA store make me a hose, works great.

For the record, the late model GM pumps use a slightly smaller shaft, and no v-belt pulleys are available for them. These are the small aluminum ones with separate reservoirs.

Is your rack set up for GM or Ford pressures? For one of my current projects that uses a Ford rack, I built a new bracket to mount a pump off a late-model Crown Vic to the GM engine. Yeah, you can use various add-ons to adjust pressures and volumes, but I think it's best to keep the components matched throughout.

i would do like chickenridge suggests; adapt a ford ps pump to your gm motor. i have a mustII rack on my 58 chevy truck, i get no feed back through the steering wheel. all the research leads me to believe i have too much pressure. i called fatman and set my alignment to his specs. i sort of float down the road, not going side to side or anything even at 80 mph, just a funny feeling that i can't get used to. i also have a ford hydroboost that uses ps pressure, so i have 2 reasons to go with a ford pump

I was thinking of putting an OEM pump and getting a pressure valve to adjust it to the ford rack will this work?

most of the M2 suppliers have the valve yoiu install in the back of a regular GM pump to match the pressure.

I used the old style GM pump and it works like a charm.

the m2 power rack likes a max of 700 psi, the gm pump can run upwards of
1200 psi! makes the car feel a little skittish on the road, also it can and will push the seals right out, bad leaks!
don't worry its an easy fix...unscrew the pressure valve that goes into the gm power steering pump. you'll notice at the end of the lock nut there should be some washers ... the less washers the more pressure that the pump will make. mine had 1 washer on it,thats why the old gal was crow hopping when i nailed the throttle! do not go any more than 5 washers in total!
my 3500 lb car with fairly fat front tires needed three to tame it down!

  12. Has anyone tried the 55-59 GEN/PS combo to power a rack?
What about converting the GEN to ALT?
