Just curious if anyone knows what length steering column works best in the 54's when running a independent with rack & pinion, I took a measurement but without any seat in car its hard to judge what would be Best ? Im thinking a 30" or 32" but I dont want to buy a column & find out I screwed up ?

  2. It depends on the diameter of the steering wheel and the dish, if you use the stock wheel it might hit your legs unless you lower your seat

You mean nobody has put a tilt column in a 54 with rack that remembers the length of column or what it came out of ?

I used a 32" in my 54. I have a Mustang II front end and was able to use only 2 u-joints. I have a 350 with Hedman headers that don't interfere with the steering shaft.
I have an old 70's chevy steering wheel on it now. lc

One thing you need to look out for is where the wiring plug wires come out of the column. I have an IDIDIT and the standard exit point is right where the column bolts to the dash. I had to make a spacer to hold the column about 1/4" to 3/8" down from the dash, to keep from smashing the wires. IDIDIT will move the exit point if you custom order it. Check which column you will be using, for this exit hole. It will save you time.

I'm using the factory column. Cut to fit, cheaper that way.
