Anyone know of any good books about someone on a road trip or cross country type adventure in an old car?
Not exactly a book, but the best Road Trip chronicle I have ever read! http://www.b***kustom.com/blog/?p=15
Read "Go Down Together" its about Bonnie and Clyde. They steal multiple cars, and of course they meet their end in a 34 Ford 2 door sedan.
If you're asking about The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, then no, it's about Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters on a cross country trip in an old bus named Further. It's written by Tom Wolfe who also wrote a book called The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby. That one has a section on Roth and another on Junior Johnson. Kinda weird, we were just talking about this the other day. Larry T
Blue Highways, as previously mentioned (William Least Heat-Moon) and The English Major by Jim Harrison Alan
Gotta agree with all the above, except I'm not familiar with The English Major (although I know Jim Harrison via the Grateful Dead). Enlighten me! I'm working on one of my own, but it won't be out for another 18 months or so. Includes many destinations you can relate to, like B-ville and Asbury, Missouri. Scotty
Spark your Dream by Candelaria and Herman Zapp. They traveled from South America through the US in a '28 Graham-Paige in 2007. They've since traveled to Alaska, had a couple kids on the road too. They were at both Hershey fall meet and Macungie.
DREISER WROTE IT! Perhaps the very first American "road trip" book is A Hoosier Holiday by Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945). First published in 1916. Dreiser, living in New York, was well known by this time and had an international reputation, from his writings. He had not been back to his home state of Indiana for over twenty years. So he packs it up with an artist friend and they hit the road back to Indiana in a Maxwell. A two-week, 2,000 mile pilgrimage. Part teenage nostalgia, middle-age yearning for adventure and a writers desire to take the pulse of the nation. Steeped in the sights, sounds and talk of the Middle West. Way before todays system of good roads or good maps - they did get lost. Probably less about the car itself but more about the adventure.....
Steinbeck drove his 3/4 ton GMC camper truck across the United States, along with his trusty dog, in 1960. He said he was setting out to familiarize himself with his own country. Wrote a book about it called "Travels with Charley". Great book.
A couple of Gary Paulsen books - The Car - more of a teens' book but an easy read and good story. Pilgrimage On A Steel Ride - A Harley ride, not a car. Good book though.
