Acts like vapor lock, happens randomly, if I prime the carb with gas starts up and is good to go, acts like pump, but thought mechanical pumps don't go in and out, just die. My fuel line does have a hard turn, but no kink. Help!
How many miles on cam? Sounds like a worn fuel pump cam lobe. This was a common problem on flatties. Quick fix was to remove pump and glue a 1/4" nut to top of push-rod and replace pump.
In line electric pump and a regulator. It'll push thru the stick pump. Hide everything under the car.
Sounds like a restriction in fuel line or tank caused by intermittent plugging up. Remove gas cap, remove fuel line from fuel pump inlet, blow the line out back into the tank with compressed air. If it helps, remove and clean gas tank. Used to happen all the time!
i had a pretty rusty tank, clogged my first filter all the time and created intermittent loss of fuel. fixed it by taking out the tank and shaking a bunch of gravel in it for like 30 mins then flushing it out.
Since there are several things that can this problem, the most common is dirt clogging the tank, line, filter, pump, or carb. I recommend taking a systematic approach and start at one end of the fuel system (tank) and work towards the other (carbs). A thorough cleaning of the system is most likely all you need. It's unlikely the fuel pump pushrod is worn to the point of not providing the needed lift to the pump... If that were the case the fuel pressure, if any, would be consistently poor rather than intermittent Check the fuel pump stand. It is fairly common for the constant pound action of the pump rod to slowly, over time, distort the mounting flange on the stand, basically lifting it upwards, having the same effect as shortening the rod.
sounds similiar to what my 8ba problem had, I had to change the fuel pump multiple times before i found one that wasn't a defect. also i measured the fuel pump rod and it was a little short so i replaced that as well, along with the filters. Also my brother had similiar problem and it turned out that it was the fuel pump rod was worn a bit
Quickest, cheapest way to diag. is to do what handyandy289 suggested but you dont have to replace the pump. Just do the 1/4 nut thing and see how it runs. If it fixes it you can decide what to do after that. If not, look elsewhere.
