History 120+ pics of vintage car dealerships

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Revoh, Dec 18, 2010.

  1. Most of these were taken in the early 1960s from dealerships in the Midwest. My dad worked for Chevy, and saved the photos when they cleaned out the Omaha office in 1986.

I scanned a whole mess of them, and posted them here.

I know a lot of folks here seem to get a kick out of this kind of thing, and a majority of these have not been gazed upon for 30+ years by anyone other than me--until I scanned them today.

Anyhow, I hope you enjoy them. :)

Love the pictures, but it makes my heart ache when I look at all those used car lots & think if only at the time I had a little money & a place to store some of them. Oh well it is what it is.Great pictures & fond memories. Thanks for posting.:)

Great pics, thanks for posting. Some of those dealers look like the one I worked at when I first started. Damn I'm getting old.

    Interesting, to be sure!
Would you have photos of Fred Gibbs Chevrolet?
As the story goes ****y Harrel was traveling through Iowa and his vehicle broke down near Fred Gibbs Chevrolet and they became friends and began a racing carreer with Fred sponsoring ****y Harrel.

And what about the washrooms? The one in our international haverster dealership was something else. I was scared to go in there when I was a kid.

Thank you, that was great! My latest obsession is 60-66 Chevy/GMC pickups, and if you look for them, there's lots in your photos, along the back rows of the dealer lots. My favorite was the line of halfton and heavy trucks in some field in the snow. That just says "Midwest auto dealer in winter" for me.

  20. Thanks, guys--I'm glad you like 'em!

I don't remember seeing a picture from there. There were a few left that I didn't scan, but most of them weren't worth it.

Very nice slice of history. Bet we'd cry if we knew the prices of some of the used cars on those lots back in the day!

Very Kewl. As a kid I would see places like that throughout the Texas Panhandle and New Mexico on road trips. Thanks!

They spell like most of the "techs" here at work, which I have to translate into "creative stories" for the customer invoices. Thanks for the great photos.

I really got a kick out of these. Even spotted a very rare 62 Chevy "bubble top" with the left over 61 roof line in one of the pics. I remember when my Dad drove home a new 70 Impala 4 dr from Kinmans in Grand Island Nebraska. Pretty sure the Strong Brothers dealership was in Holdrege Nebraska. Thanks for posting!!!!

I swear one of those photos was taken in Carroll, Iowa, where I bought my '57 Chevy in 1960...

    R-

Didn't Hover Motors have a lot on the corner of Speer and Federal in Denver...???

  29. That's very observant. And yes, there was a Hover Motors in Denver. But that was different than my granddad's. You wouldn't think there would be more than one in Colorado at the same time, and Hover really isn't that common of a name, but that's the way it goes.
