I hail from the interior of BC Canada. I'm currently 22 and making my attempt at slowly constructing a hot rod while also attempting to get through university. I was born into hot rodding. My dad owns a 1949 Chevy that he's had longer than I've been around. He's currently working on building a Model A. I'm currently the owner of 3 cars. 1989 Pontiac Firebird that I beat on when the snow flies. 1974 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Type LT which I use as a daily driver in the summer. But the one that applies here is my 1957 Oldsmobile 98. Since the Firebird and Camaro don't have much to do with traditional hot rodding, let me talk about this Oldsmobile I've got. The Oldsmobile is original as far as I can tell. It's the 98 2 door hardtop model, so the really big one. It's got a tired old big block 371 connected to a hydramatic. The car is mostly in pieces, but from what I can tell, I've got the majority of the chrome. The interior needs to be completely redone. The exterior... also needs a little TLC. My uncle originally purchased it in 1975 from a guy out on Vancouver Island. He then drove it all the way to just inside the border of Ontario. He slowly worked on restoring it back to it's former glory. Unfortunately that slowed to a halt after he was diagnosed with cancer. The car proceeded to sit in northwestern Ontario. In 1999 he passed away from the cancer. 2 years later I purchased the car from my aunt. Me and my dad trailered this car all the way back to BC. Since the car has returned, I've had the carb rebuilt. Torn down the engine and cleaned it up. The fan has been changed from the original to a newer electric fan. I've also replace the ancient brake technology in the front with some nice new disk brakes. Finally, after sitting for almost 35 years, I started and drove the car this year. It made it to exactly 1 rod run. On the return trip, it over heated, and the oil pressure plummeted. I started to do an oil change in hopes that putting some 20W50 would prolong the life of the engine, sadly I can't seem to get the oil canister to seal up properly (serious, who thought these were a good idea?). Ideally, I'd like to change it to a more conventional spin on oil filter. If anyone knows of a good way to do this, I'd love to know. I'd also love to know anything about these engines that I can. Any information is welcome.
