I was at Scarliners this afternoon and we were plotting some deviant mission of his which involved the use of some larger diameter wheels and I got to wondering how big a diameter STEEL RIMS are readily available??????
I know Stockton Wheel http://www.stocktonwheel.com/ makes smoothies, rallys and OEs up to 17x9". I have seen some 20" steel wheels, but they did not look right to me. GMB
Sonny Mac Industries does 18, 19 and 20 inch, but their website link doesn't seem to be working. Sorry I don't know where they are based. www.sonnymac.com
try Sonny Mac Industries Inc. 101 S. Mission Ave. Okmulgee, OK 74447 US Website: sonnymac.com phone: (918) 756-2230 fax: (918) 752-0558 otherwise these guys reckon they sell them : http://www.wheelmastercl***ics.com/products.htm
Did you guys see the '38 Ford coupe in R&C this month with the big billet painted "steelies"? Looked weird. A real steel wheel in a large diameter would look alot better.
this sonny mac? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=45740&highlight=sonny+valve+covers
. . . I looked into this at one point. . . and realized that when they get big steel wheels also get really really heavy. . . sort of defeats the purpose of a hot rod.
Get ahold of Pete Paulsen. He'll bang out whatever you want, and he's pretty easy to work with. Or if you want to make something off the wall yourself, I got 4 31" wires. You could splice em together and make your own centers. I mean hell if your after hoops why not go all the way?
Also try some factory stuff...as new cars and trucks come with bigger aluminum wheels some still have a steel fullsize spare. I believe some chevys have 16 and 17 inch steel spares and some dodge trucks may have 17 inch steels also. Might be worth checkin out.
Here's a 17X8 that I had built at Stockton Wheel. Custom orders take a looooong time with them. Very heavy, 34 pounds without the tire.
DODGE RAMS COME WITH 20" ALLUMINUM WHEELS, AND THE SPARE IS A 20" STEEL WHEEL. bEST PART IS THEY ARE 5X5.5" FOR TWO WHEEL DRIVE TRUCKS.
