Been told by old school chevy guys that the oil ring can be removed from a sbc, Now, before you get to worried about oil consumption or compression, this sbc (327) will be going into a beater toy that will not see the street. Just a ''farm toy'' that I am building. It will see high rpms and get VERY hot. what are your thoughts about not running the middle ring?

Millions of motors have oiling rings,Why do you want to be the first without ,You need them ,,,,,,,,GM ford or chrysler didnt spend trillions on using them if they werent not needed....

You can run it without the middle ring. There are alot of piston engines with just 2 rings. But one has to be the oil ring(which is the bottom ring).

  9. The oil ring, or the second compression (middle) ring?

There have been a few cases I know of where it has proven to be acceptable to run one compression ring and the oil ring****embly....in these cases, the pistons were specifically made to only have the two grooves.

These have all been race-only engines intended for extremely high rpm (in excess of 10,000), where every small bit of unnecessary reciprocating/rotating weight was eliminated; or a couple of odd '70s SBC large stroker engines where the oil ring would have been located in the pin boss area and it was deemed necessary to move the ring package up.

I can see little to no benefit in doing this on a modern engine, even race-only, and the chances are that, given your implied definition of "farm-only", you are not going to be using any exotic*****s-type top ring, SS-50U oil ring****embly, special oil control mods, etc.....so be prepared to see detonation issues from oil contamination in the chamber. Not making judgments or trying to be a*****...

If you meant running without the oil ring****embly...that's daylight madness. If the frictional losses are that major an issue, use an ultra-low tension****embly...which will require pistons with suitable ring land dimensions.

The second ring is not a compression ring really,it's an oil scrapper according to Smokey Yunick.

one less ring=less friction and no scraper ring keeps oil on cylinder walls. will burn oil but was told will help keep motor from overheating. motor will only be run for 30 mins to an hr (a very hard 30 mins to 1 hr) and then tore apart and checked.
