I have a 700r automatic behind a 283 and the trans only shifts from 1-2-3 but not into overdrive. Is this a TV Cable issue or do I need a lock-up converter kit? if so how do you install the kit? I apologize in advance it this is already been addressed in past threads. I searched but did not find anything so far. Anyone I can call to discuss in detail or any online resources would be greatly appreciated. Payton
Should shift into 4th regardless of whether you have a lock up converter. could be your TV cable is a little slack or there might be a slight restriction at the plunger base. TV cable should be about as tight as a banjo string with the throttle wide open
Damn right! I rebuild about one of these a week because of poorly adjusted cables. Too tight, no fourth, too loose and it shifts through all gears by 20 MPH...and burns it up. Have someone that knows what they are doing show you how to adjust it.
If you dont get that TV cable right your going to bake that 700R4..if you havent already...how much driving have you done with it like this...it could be already too late
A common problem is with the governor. The head of it will loosen up and the first symptom is a perfectly working trans with no 3-4 shift.
I agree with all the others that the TV cable adjustment is critical. I am about ready to get my '40 Chevy running and have been shopping for a kit to install the cable. I'm using an Edelbrock 4106 Performer carb and most of the kits available won't work with it. I have called most of the trans companies and the kits for my application range from about $50 to close to $300. Some kits are just an arm to attach to the carb and use stock cables and some include a bracket along with spring that has to be changed in the trans and Lokar cables for TV and throttle. Decisions, decisions.....
