I've got two seperate cars that need two different master cylinders. Both have drum brakes front and back. The first car I was thinking of using a VW (god no!) mc. There was one that has a remote resevoir. Things are pretty tight under the car and the remote fill would really help. What years were they? Do you guys think it would work with the drum brakes? The other car is my 32. Due to too much going on under the car I need to do a firewall mount mc and clutch slave cyl. What would be a good looking combo to run? There is a Chevy truck mc that looks good and has been used for the clutch too. What was it? Thanks Clark
The combo Chevy truck MC is a '60. But you need to swap the guts from one side to the other because the stock pedal ***embly put them on the wrong side. This is the MC that the Ansen pedals use.
To keep this alive I'll add that I got a complete, fresh MC from NAPA that was cheaper than a rebuild kit for mine... I think it was around 20 bux.... Remanufactured MIGHT be cheaper than a rebuild kit.... Weird, but it was for me..... I have a hand trowell to bend the tubing if you need one.... hahaha....
You might shoot wilwood an e-mail. I nearly bought on of their mc's for a project a few years ago. They tech guys were very helpful and will confuse the **** out of you.
Nobody knows anything about the VW master cylinder?? Is it just 1960 Chevy trucks or is it a couple of years? ***G...if I need your tubing bender I'll let you know Clark
Clark, my Bendix book lists the manual shift Chevy M/cyl as #11201 for the years 60-62... 1 1/8 bore You do have to swap the guts for the clutch and brake bores. A simple snap ring. The built in residual valve will slow down the clutch pedal return and cause it to slip and the drum brakes won't have the valve that they need. The VW **** is too new for me to know anything about. I've heard that Billet specialties makes a remote resevoir but that's hearsay. I have no direct knowledge. Lots of the old hot rods mounted two 57ish Ford firewall m/cyls side by side. Again you have to remove the residual valve on the clutch m/cyl.
Tommy ...Thanks on the chevy mc. Is it a dual mc for the brakes? I'm guessing just single. I thought the vw thing was older. I worked on a Tbucket that had one. Clark
Are those mason jar master cylinders? One of my project is to replace the single M/C with a dual on my '64 P/U. Safety is a concern, since I poped a line on a single. It never happens at a good time. A street sweeper pulled out in front of me, almost my last ride. I want one that looks period, not one of those square plastic types.
Yes it's a siamese single resevoir for both cylinders. We put a new one on a flathead 27 in 1979 and it's still doing fine. It might be a good idea to replace it now. I'm not afraid of a NEW single m/cyl with new lines, cylinders and hoses. To an old fart like me, T buckets ARE new fangled fibergl*** posers! I'm kidding, I'm kidding...some what.
I think I'll go with the truck mc on the 32. Like you said with everything new it shouldn't be a problem. I ususally use a 60's nova drum/drum mc but things are pretty tight under fatabones car and the remote res. would make things easier on him. Tommy used the word poser...hahahaha Clark
Do you need the mustang proportioning valve for that setup, or just plumb the front to the front, and the rear to the rear? Would it still work right like that?
clark any vw beetle (non super beetle) or karmann ghia from 66-76 had the dual circuit master with a remote res.68 and later ghias had disk in the front but the same master was used. earlyer beetles had a remote master also but im pretty sure it was a single circuit also you can geta jaguar xjs master that has a remote master and big bores that can be used with drum brakes.
To the best of my knowledge, all of the later Beetle/Ghia masters were 19MM (3/4"). The later type 3's were a little bigger I think, but still only like 20MM. That small of a bore combined with big car sized wheel cylinders will give you awsome feeling brakes but the pedal travel will likely be way to much. You could probably fool around with the pivot points on your pedal ***embly to acheive the correct travel, but it would be easier to put in a larger Master.
Wilwood makes a firewall mount pedal ***embly that has the clutch and brake pedal on it part number 340-3950 cost is under $175.00 Pete and jakes makes a clutch/brake pedal for your 32. simple under the floor installation. part number 3040 around $300 dso
To re-hash an old pust, CLARK, do you remember BLAKE's flamed beetle...??? I'll bet that ****er knows a bit about VW's but he's to embar***ed to speak up.... Shoot a PM his way......
