Who (name of shop and where it is) rolled the tubing into circles? Your build looks great!

Steve, I have a tank from an Albatross, same vintage. I'm saving pics of your build for when I finally get started. If you don't mind me asking, where is that center mounted rack and pinion from? Also, what height person did you build for? Curious about the approximate measurement from the front axle to the rear, vertical roll cage supports? Thanks for the updates.

The rack & pinion is from pro works 20 : 1 ratio

Thanks, Steve. Besides the info on the r&p, the pre-bent roll cages look like they could be a great time saver. Look forward to contacting you mid-Feb. Happy holidays, Lou

  8. Really nice stuff! I love fabrication, making parts and welding -- you've done a fantastic job so far. Best of luck and hopefully the FlatCad team will see you on the salt next year!

  10. Steve, shoot me your Email and I will forward the PDF of DJs new Hans type device. Looks like it will work well in tight spaces.

    That's awesome.

What trans are you running? And more importantly, how many gears, and how are you shifting it?

Still in the planing stage, but thinking 3 or 4 speed trany with all the gears removed except 2, hydraulic clutch, shift cable to trany linckage.

A couple buddies and I talked about building one for a little while, and I thought using a 4- or 5-speed internal-rail style trans would be the ticket.
I thought I could bolt the stock ball-and-socket shifter (like a T-5 from a Mustang) in place, and up front next to my right arm, I could put another ball-and-socket shifter, and connect them with a piece of solid rod running along the hull, then bending at a 90-degree and going to the shifter on the trans.

That's explained horribly, but I think it would work. Basically, it's two ball-and-socket style shifters, solidly connected with a rod and actuated in tandem.

  21. We are going to run a 3 speed (unless a 4 shows up) with reverse removed. I am going to copy the simple and effective Jack Kelly Bellytank and run a Hurst shifter up front with Morse Cables connecting the ******. No monkey motion needed.

First of all great build Steve. Now ,a word of warning....I was 10 and a half stone stone for 25 years, eighteen months after starting our tank I turned 40 , it was like a switch got thrown and my weight changed to 12 and a half stone in no time and settled there....makes it a tighter fit...:D

We have the same box as the Kelly n Hall tank, Morse cables but at the moment we have two sticks, looking at a straight line shifter,( I'd go the 4 speed if I were you Trent, ditch reverse and make a new rear plate).Despite what you'll hear quick shifts make a huge difference

Our first two years on the salt we started in 2nd gear, now that we're re-gearing the rear end to 2.56:1 we'll be using first. As it is at that ratio the split on 3/4 is around 6300 to 4200....we've only got 220hp down there,

  25. Looking good Steve. These things are a labor of love, I know. I see the picture of the ammo, will ask him about it when we have breakfast.

Hi Steve, we know I'm mentally challenged so you will have to help me. If your engine can make 100/120 horsepower would you be better off with a open drive rear end rather than a quickchange rear that will rob you of 10 to 20 HP?

I know you did the research!

    Great project, Bob
