So I drove my tuck a lot today. All the way from nc to new jersery and back to md. Worst I got was 10 mpgs in town and then three times all highway I got 14 mpg. 352 that's all stock except a 600 cfm edelbrock, c-6, and 373s. I don't thin k its that bad. Once I do exaust and a hot ignition it may do better. And I'm working on getting a rear with 3.00s in it. I'm happy not a single issue the whole day.
my daily driver is a 69 f100 4x4 with the stock 360, 4spd with the granny, 350's with 33" tires. my pop bought it new, he said it used to get about 17-18 mpg when it was fairly new. i get about 13 mph with it now but its also pushing 400k....damn work horse, it just won't die!
Maybe a minor jet change in the carb and a "little" tuning with a vacuum gauge, you should be able to gain another couple mpg's.. Somthing to think about...
I had the vacuum guage out the other night, it was a little high on vacuum, but I'm going to start with timing first. Then dial it it in with the vacuum guage. It does run a bit rich.
1968 Ford F-100 with 390 2x4 4-speed. 22 MPG at 70 MPH on gasoline 18 MPG at 70 MPH on E-10 Dad bought this truck with about 12,000 miles in 1969. Original 360 2 barrel and C-6 dogmatic, plus a bug screen on the front. Mileage at 70 was 9 MPG Jon.
I had a 1967 F250 4wd with a 352 2V, NP 435 4 speed, and factory 4.56:1 ratios. Ol' Brute got 10 mpg coming or going. I didn't take him over 65 mph as things were spinning pretty fast in the transfer case due to the lower ratios.
I can get around 16 on the highway out of the 390 thats in my country squire, all I done was add electronic ignition and played with the jets some and dont think thats too bad of mileage out of that big of car.
I have 2 of these carbs.. I bought 6 Holley 4-bbl carbs from a dude that had them in his garage for years.. One of the other carbs is for an LS-6 454 4-speed Chevelle, another Holley with small primaries and large secondaries but still has a standard Holley bolt pattern.. A 3310-2 750 and another GM Holley 600 cfm carb that I can't find the #'s on any carb site.. I only paid 50 bucks for all 6 carbs.. ChuChing!!!
Does it have the Ford number on it? I'm going to restore it for a shop that is restoring a 1969 Shelby GT500 with the 428 CJ.
Thanks for the reminder, I need to tune up both of that on my FE'ed '68 F100, has run 13 mph but lately slumped to 10 or 11. Just given a Petronix unit for it, found much help with that on a previous 390. Need to switch to better rear gears, as well. My first 390 that doesn't have heat or smoking issues, just maintained really well by owners over the years.
The 2 Ford 735 cfm Holleys I have were made for 1968... I'll have to dig up the choke horn List #'s a little later... One might be a Ford "replacement" carb..
All those carbs that I listed need to be gone through... And by the way.. The guy that sold them to me didn't know what he had.. To him, they were junk carbs... When I talked to him, he didn't sound like he was a gearhead like most of us here..
