    now here's BEYOND COOL...
This Christmas morning, I went to my hot rod buddy's house in the '34 for a a visit like I've been doing for years and finally remembered to ask him to bring his dad's hood ornament outside so I could photograph it.
This is the hood ornament from my buddy's dad's 1938 Packard.
Dennis' dad bought this in Hawaii in 1938 from a little shop that sold them on these wood bases.
I'm betting that most were just used for display in someones home or office, but they were made as hood ornaments.
Dennis' dad put this one on his brand new Packard and it was there until he sold it in the late 1940's. He was so attached to it that he sold the Packard without it and just put the stock cap back on the car.
He put it back on the wood base and has just been a display item for over 60 years.

no ID of who made it...the only lettering is "Hawaiian Surf Rider" around the ridge just where it attaches to the radiator cap

Looks like the Duke! Too cool!

  4. I think its from the Big Kahuna surf competition. I swear that they still use that for the big Surf comps on North Shore. I love the fact that he used it as a hood ornament because not everyone else does that kind of thing. Basically its awesome and thanks for sharing.

when I used to work in the bodyshop at a Freightliner dealership, there was a guy who had one on the hood of his semi...Said it's a trophy topper from a surf comp he won in Hawaii years ago...and that was almost 10 years ago...

1920s Hawaiian Metal Surf Rider Sculpture
This is the very difficult to find, all metal Hawaiian surf rider sculpture. In the 1920s, these would sometimes be used as a hood ornaments and trophies. This fabulous antique surfer displays splendid detail to craftsmanship. The surfer is wearing the one piece wool swim suit common in the 20s. This captivating rarity exudes a terrific feeling of motion on a wave.
At the bottom of the page you'll notice a photograph of Duke Kahanamoku with this very same surf rider on the hood of his car. Unfortunately, because these already had value as collectible by the 1960s, it was stolen from Duke's car.
These scarce surf rider sculptures have continued to be solid investments that can be enjoyed while they continue to appreciate in value. Still bright silver in color, this uncommon surfrider measures 7 1/2" x 5 1/2" x 6" and is in excellent condition.
This dazzling 1920s metal surfer sculpture is featured in the full color hardcover coffee table book, Vintage Surfboards II, available later this year.
The last similar metal surf rider from the same time period sold in the March 2008 auction for $3,660.
This version, with the metal base, is actually an even more uncommon find.
    Pre-auction estimate: $3,000-$4,000. No Reserve
