just wondering how it would look to run thrusts with skinny whites.
if anyone has a pick, (or an opinion) please post!

how would it look on a '63 PIMPala? (don't want raised letters)

and i know, ANYTHING looks good if you are drunk enough!

    many thanks!

  2. it was done alot in the '62-66 area ,I plan on it for my 40 ,running 235/78/15 rears w F/78/14's front- both bias plys ,the 235's are a good bit taller than the orig 600 16's, so i may lower my rpm's a bit ,which is a good thing for a babbit pounder

The only '62 and newer cars that look "right" with WWWs also have gold spokes, gold Landau bars on the roof pillars with an oval window in the overpadded vinyl top and an actual PIMP and his girls inside!

Skinny whites are a natural in-tradition of the 60s when the wheels were a popular item on street cars.

The only exception are WWW Vogue casing M&H Racemaster slicks on a FED on Americans, because that's how they came.

    Sweet!

    I love this place!

I've never bought a set of "nice wheels" for anything.... steel has always done the trick for me... but i am a self proclaimed CHEAP *******!

skinny whites are cheap enough (compared to WWW) that i just might buy some torqs for this one!

  5. Actually i was talking about era ,not cars ,but now that you mention it , i have plenty of old pics of cars with em from 38 to 64, yes, mostly 38- 64 chevy's + not a fuzzy roof and wire spokes in the bunch ,

I guess it was a local thing. You'ld have been laughed out of the Mighty Mo in my home town if you showed up with any kind of white wall on a mag wheel. To us mag wheels were performance wheels.

I know someone will say what about the whitewall slicks. I saw more of them in the shows than I ever saw on the track.

The customs ran the thin walls on chrome reversed wheels but mags were blackwall only where I came from.

I have a set on my 51 plymouth and they look good.I had to think a while about putting whites on the mags, but glad i did.I had blackwalls on the mags and the whitewalls were on steel wheels, and i swapped them around. My whites are a 1 1/2 inch width which are a little wider than some

When you think about it there is such a tiny difference between supremes and torque-thrusts . . . both five spoke, both have curved spokes, etc. but one says "performance" and the other says "style" . White walls on torque thrusts just look wrong because it is a mixed message.

That rule isn't hard and fast but it is true in general. (I drive a "truck" with wires- "utility" and "style" don't really go together either).

i just glanced through the "50 Years of Rod & Custom" book, 61-67 chapter, and while it's not definitive, it's a pretty broad overview of the era. it's a pretty good mix of wheel and tire combos, and i was only slightly surprised to see that ONLY chrome wheels or hubcap-equipped cars had ww's of any size. any raw/polished aluminum wheel was blackwall only.

that goes along with what i was gonna recommend, that on a chrome wheel, like a cragar or supreme, the whitewall looks good, but it looks a little off with a race-style mag. kind of a show vs. go thing, maybe. that's not to say i haven't seen whitewalls on drag cars, but that may have more of an economic issue, you know? whatever holds air up front, good tires for the back :D

  11. like its been said , prolly a local /economy thing ,but i don't care i'm gonna run em ,also an economy thing -I have em , its not like a babbit pounder six is gonna be fast in any case ,full on 235 full oiler or 302 jimmy maybe in a fifties frame of mention, but never a 216, not by any muscle car standards, its all in the looks for that car, got a old dragways tape recently from a HAMB'r and it showed alot of WWW slicked cars and several 60's cars w both wide and narrow whites w mags, but thats just us hicks in MN, lol

  12. I'm still thinkin they don't look so bad, a couple famous cars had em -

  13. What kind of wheel is that green Model A running?

  14. just a guess ,I would say gold toned supreme's

praisethelowered brings up some good points and are some of the basics in design... the wheel/tire combo is a keystone on a mild custom. there is no grey area when it comes to tacky. (sounds like something a queer would say... maybe im a closet ***??)

consider an award winner in the pics posted above... those cars are heavily customised and (IMO) fall under the Tacky label, but i believe they are neat and were meant to be over the top, the wheel/tire package fits the cars Theme.

for an average shmo rolling a lowered ****box with some suede paint and frenched lights the design of the car still retains 99% of its original look. to put rims generally used on perfomance cars onto a cruiser with pinner whites looks silly.

my suggestion, roll supremes if you want the cruiser look... not americans.

the supremes are cheap and have a similar 5 spoke style as do cragar ss wheels ....if u want a custom look as opposed to a muscle car look....both look good with skinny whites .....my .02 ....thank god you are going with skinny whites as opposed to the www ....nice choice ..got pix of your car ? maybe someone could a bit computer magic on it ....

Just do what turns you on. Sometimes I like to see wide whites on polished torq's. I especially loved them on a big long caddy. And sometimes I like stock wheels with spiders and sometimes I like cragars and.............Well as you can see I like it all depending on the car and the look you want. Who cares what others think do what YOU like! Satin
