pb blaster usually does the trick for me on most things theres been only a few times the blaster has failed me just my 2 cents

    good luck

  3. I'd try a phillips head socket on a 1/2" impact gun........ and probably tear up more than I fixed. :p

Might be worth a try though.

im sure someone will have a better way,,but if all else fails ,,weld a nut to the head of the bolt ..then you should be able to get plenty of leverage..
then find you some new bolts.. oh well!

  5. Yeah, what Sam said. Probably the fastest way.
I've had pretty good luck heating screws with a little butane pencil torch though. Might try that if ya have one. Won't get hot enough to melt it, but you can keep on smokin it till it gets the nut/threads hot.

If things get ugly go to the Snap on guy and they make a easy out that has a hex for a socket drill the screw and pull it this way.

    Good luck

I'd use an impact driver. That's what they're for.

  9. Pound real hard with a punch, such as a screwdriver with the handle cut off. The pounding helps break up the rust.

SamIyam made a custom insert for his impact tool that has a screwdriver head and a handle welded on the side of the insert. You just set the tip in the screw and while the impact is pounding the screw, you turn the handle and the screw comes out. It works.

Try heating the screw and melt some parrafin into the threads. Parrafin is available at the grocery store as "canning wax".

  11. Man, those screws have been a pain in my ass for years. Every frickin car has them, and at least one on every car causes problems. All the previous replies are good ones. Personally I have found a combination of heat, putting an impact driver socket in there and pounding on it, an impact driver, using an air impact on low, air chisel, and a last resort drilling them out. Its hard to get WD 40 or PB in there.
The key is having the right size screwdriver bit so you dont mess up the head.
If you do that youre pretty much left to drilling or chiseling it out.
    Good luck!!

....i thought of this after i posted the first time..

this is worth a shot...take a small chisel and a hammer(doesnt have to be a big one) try and get in the edge of of the grove of the phillips head..and peck at it like your trying to turn it out at the same time,,ive done it this way a few times on other stripped stuff and broken bolts and it sometimes it works..

I want to second the impact driver suggestion (not to be confused with an impact wrench). If you don't own one, hot foot it down to your nearest auto parts or tool store and get one. They are cheap, easy to use, and work better than you can imagine. The combined force of tapping and twisting works great and they rarely strip out the screw's slot. I have met a few screws that wouldn't yield to one, but there aren't many.

Forget that wd 40 crap, get yourself some "Areokroil" the best rust pentitrant on the damn planet. I used to work on paper machines and have seen this stuff work on bolts that had the head flaking off and they still turned out.

That stuff is the shit!!!!! Can't say enough about it.

That don't work, for me, I'm on to the Impact Driver.
At that point you should be good and pissed off, and watsed enough time.
Weld a nut to it by filling in the center of the nut with weld. Attach and Impact Gun to it, and rip it the hell outta its death grip.

Good luck, we've all been there more times that we wish to recall.

donnie, heres another suggestion as the same thing happened to me while removing doors off an olds.. this worked for all the stuck screws without destroying the heads.

get a wide headed screw driver, it has to fit snuggly. clamp a vice grip onto the handle of the screw driver and apply as much pushing pressure as you can while keeping the screwdriver level... slowly rotate the screw driver, it should break loose.

or... like most said, get an impact driver..

desertratrodder was using one while i was up there ...christ, those things are worth the money... and its portable.

unless i missed it no one mentioned the best way (imho): the hand held impact drivers that you hit with a hammer. don't know what exactly they are called, but they work.

someone fill us in with a name if you have it.

All of the above, you will prevail. Take a break when you get frustrated, I tend to ruin stuff then. :D

  24. I combine a couple of the above techniques

Some heat and as it cools, give it a shot of PB Blaster. It
will steam some of it off, but the rest will wick down the
threads. I do this a couple times and it usually works.

I tried the same process with the Parafin and it worked
    just as well.

^^This is the EXACT tool you need. I have to use it on every old car I pop the doors off of. Still might have to use a little heat and penetrating oil, but you'll do the least amount of damage using a "handheld" impact driver.
