I'm guessing the real problem was being trapped in an ******, not necessarily how long it was. 29 hours in an ****** is about 1 week normal time.

One thing that has not been mentioned is oil. If you are a believer in single viscosity oil, change right now. 10 w 30 works well, but for really cold (-20 F or more) weather, 5 w something works better. There is really little else to be done. Cold weather WILL uncover any weaknesses in the car, especially the battery. But there is little you can do other than buy a new one when the old one dies.

On the bright side, you will find that under really cold conditions, the snow and ice are not as slick.

The main routes are gritted (rock salt) but this being the harest Winter for decades stocks are already running low, yesterday you could actually see where the road had been gritted through the compacted snow / ice. We have been very lucky here as the Island has it's own micro climate aand Snowdonia has taken the brunt of the snow. Some parts of England have closed roads and our nearest motorway the M6 was closed and traffic was stranded overnight.

Being fairly rural it's quite pleasant here apart from the cold, the views of the Snowdonia mountain ranges (Snowdon the highest is only 3560 ft) is spectacular.

Thanks for the advice guys, keep warm.

Amen! It felt like a damn week, the wind was so hard I could feel it coming through the p***enger side door seals.

But it was a lesson learned, I now have a well equipped survival kit in the trunk now.

    from somewhere

We are currently enduring a big blizzard right now...it took me over an hour to get to work and it normally takes me 15 minutes-20 minutes. Our interstates look like giant ski slopes. We're pretty used to it as it happens every year but our drivers seem to be getting dumber and dumber each year :). My advice to you; especially coming from emergency responders; is: if you don't have to go out; DONT. Obviously we all have to go to work or go to the store, etc but if you don't have to go out; stay home. When you go to the store; stockup on water and canned goods.

Get an extra 1/2 gallon of milk and bread so you dont have to risk braving the roads if you dont have to. One less wrecked car/driving accident means one less car emergency responders must try to get to. Put a care package in your car which includes some bottles of water, warm blankets and some granola bars or something along those lines. Something to tide you over, keep you warm, etc in case you get stranded. If you know another storm is coming in; make it to the gas station and fill up...just in case.

The biggest advice i can give you while driving is to TAKE YOUR TIME. Just because you seem to be going along OK; doesn;t mean black ice and packed snow are not underneath the fluffy stuff you're driving on. If you start to slide don't use your first instinct and jack on the brakes as hard as you can...it will speel disaster :)---i've seen one too many do this and end up in the ditch, spinning dont the highway, or smashing into the gaurdrail.

When you go out to drive you car; start it up and let it run for 5-10 minutes before you hop in and drive. Make sure your car is topped up on antifreeze. Salt and the new chemicals they are using on the roads wreck Havoc on a vehicle. They are rotting away cars faster than years past. When the weather clears up; take the car through the car wash and make sure the undercarriage is cleaned well. Make sure you clean out the door jams and the inside bottom of the doors where the spray from your tires gets caught up in. this is where cars and trucks tend to rot away. Dont drive anything you want to keep and preserve in this weather....it wil NOT be good ;).

Get to the nearest pub, order a pint of hard cider & and some rye... repeat as necessary. Hope your liver lasts longer than the cold snap.

  16. about 20 degrees here and the wind blowing the snow sideways. we have approx. a foot of the white ****. took my wife to work at 6am and the roads were half way decent. just waiting inside for it to slow down and then i'll start plowing and snowblowing. what a day.
