Has anybody bought the all steel 32 Ford roadster from Speedway? I never see any for sale on e-bay. Just wondering if they are a good deal.
That looks like one of those Yea but things. It might be great for the guy who doesn't have a lot of building skills nor has the time or want to to build one out of pieces. I think a guy could build a more interesting car for less just by doing the catalog and call a HAMB Fabricator thing. Anyone ever do the math on building a similar simple steel bodied roadster on his own? That is without putting an engine in it made of unobtanium or some other nonsense but going with something like= Brookville body, Custom frame from one of our frame fabricators dropped axle from one of our dropped axle guy or So Cal other suspension pieces from the same engine, trans and rear end of choice but keep it realistic. No hand built one off aluminum block specials built by the special aluminum block guru that you have to have an appointment three years out to get an engine built. Paint in the color you want by the painter of your choice interior by the trimmer of your choice your choice of wheels and tires but again not something that costs 10K for a set of wheels and tires. I think plenty of guys on here could sit down and figure out how to build a car that is quite similar to the speedway car in concept but totally it's own car for equal or quite a bit less than the price of the speedway car with all new or fresh parts.
I been selling 32 pkg cars ever since Brookville started building roadster bodies with complete chrome fronts and my chrome rear option, steering, 2 inch chopped windshield with basically everything Speedway is offering minus paint, interior, and wheels/tires for either side of 30 K dependin on the options. Lets the customer personalize his car and not be one of the Red herd.
Almost impossible to have a nice finished steel roadster for less than $60,000 building it yourself. The same said car, built for you would start at $100,000 -danny
i looked at the demo at the hot rod and resto show , when they first came out....color deal sorta threw me off , but looked like a nice piece. a couple pieces were only avalible on this car. (body for one) the guy i talked to ,said it was designed for the guy that wants a 32 roadster right now & doesn't want to wait. he said car could be finished up literally in a weekend.
I think these bodies and ch***is come from Superformance in South Africa. Carrol Shelby stated that the Superformance Cobra was far superior to an original. A friend has one of the Superformance Cobras and it is a very nice piece.
How nice is nice at 60 grand? Sounds like a super nice rod if you do it yourself at this price. Is this regular nice or chromed out the *** nice with leather interior and crate engine and so on and so on? Basically a store bought, self built car, right? Tommy
As noted above, they are built by Superformance in South Africa. The company has high standards. Their Cobras and new Corvette replicas are truely better than the originals. The 32s are built using a lot of parts from the Speedway catalog. I'm sure Bill has sold some but, other than the Giveaway Car, I have never seen one at an event.
I am little leary esciacialy that it is made in Africa but what you can see in the pics looks to be realy good quality, the only thing I see is that the front hair pin mounts look a little weak. So what all does the 50K get you? it says that you can "get it running in a weekend" and the pics dont show a drive train in it. If it is that easy to get it driving why dont the sell a driving car for a couple grand more. Also how does ***ling and regestration work? You on your own with that? At my old work we built a new '55 chevy convertible with a new fabricated ch***is and it had to be registered as a 2010 and had to be smoged.
Just more hooplah to make it more "unobtanium" for the averae Joe. Keep on building and get yourself a better car for less money...
Hell, what has the world come to. For only 49,000 you to can have your very own belly ****on, cookie cutter, lame *** look like 75% of the other 32 Ford roadsters in the world. How ****ing lame is this.... Build the damn thing yourself. At least that way when someone asks you a question about the car you will know more than "this is the ink pen that wrote the check".
the one in my avitar was well under 60k with a hot flathead ...built it myself...its not perfect ..but thats not what i wanted i just wanted nice...i could get a 32 done like speedways ....only traditional ....and not so gay looking.... for the same price , i used to work in a shop that built 100k cars ....but they used to charge 120 an hour ...i work cheaper...
So I guess the question is "how much will it take to buy yours?". Sounds like it might be quite the deal. Regards, Ron
No knothead, I thought thirtytwo's car could be the deal. Now that's how that's a deal. Understand? Ron
I have a friend that bought one of your frame / body pkgs , and is very pleased with what he got . Nice craftsmanship and well thought out .
This is EXACTLY why I'll never have one. So is this a $100,000 car? Not trying to be a ****, just wondering how you get to that number?
Saw one at the NSRA show when they first came out. Typical Speedway quality and attention to detail if you know what I mean. But some people are perfectly happy with the Mr. Roadster parts and cheap knock-offs Speedy Bill sells. If you fall into that group, you'd probably be happy with the car. Lots of people here probably would not. My opinion is you can do a lot better for $50k.
The reason they don't (and never will) is that manufacturers such as Superformance would be required to p*** safety tests with the NTSB. Things like front and side impact that our rods (or a Tupperware Cobra) would NEVER p***. I too saw the demo car and was pleasantly surprised with the quality. That doesn't mean it was perfect, as it had been to 100 shows that year and at each one had 1000 people hanging on it. It has the wrong mix of old and new but I give them credit for trying. Face it, red '32 highboys ARE popular. My dad gets asked all the time if his Harwood car is one... it pisses him off, LOL! If we were going to build a cookie cutter car for the m***es (not for ourselves) we'd probably build it a lot like this, right?
I've always questioned in my mind the engineering (or lack thereof?) of their "bridgework" gusseting in the frame rails before they box. Seems like unnecessary weight, and labor to put in a ch***is.
I think that if you can't build it yourself, it'll be hard to have one built for close to that price. But have you SEEN what you can get for 50 grand if you're patient and scour the hamb for a few months? Here's some examples. All are about 1000 times cooler than that speedway kit and the 32 show car would make me **** my pants if it pulled into a local cruise night... f100 showtruck from 59-60 for under 30k 1932 Coupe showcar from 50's for under 50k channelled 34 pickup
I think that someone that steps up and pays $50k for one is missing 99% of the fun. For me scouring for parts, swapping and making deals is most of the fun, that and doing grunt work in the garage. I know not everyone has the time or place to do it and does have the money but I'd rather be poorer and have to scrounge and work for every piece the search is what gets me going. It most certainly can be done cheaper and with real parts my present project is a real '32 roadster, cowl, doors, frame, hood, grille, firewall,pedals,k-member, 18" wheels, 21 stud, top loader, old quick change, S/W gauges, dash, steering, axle, pretty much everything except the quarters, deck lid, top and interior and all through the HAMB, Ford Barn, and Hershey and have less than half of what those things cost invested and have had a ball doing it. It just takes persistence and yeah a lot of time watching the cl***ifieds and being in the right place at the right time which some don't have the time for, but it still can be done.
Always remember that one man's wine is another man's poison. My last roadster I bought running bad and looking o.k., but I worked on it in between driving it 9000 miles this summer. My other car, I started to redo every nut and bolt since 1991 and its almost done. So who is having 99% of the fun, I believe the guy who is driving his car that he bought almost done. I , personally don't enjoy all the running around for parts and finding out this doesn't work so that money was wasted etc.. I don't look down on anyone who chooses the way he wants to go, its all about having fun the way you want to have fun. This is a great hobby and I sure do admire the guys that have all the energy to build cars as I sure wish I had that much energy, maybe I would have been done with the other car by now. No offense!
I have only bought one item from Speedway Motors, the Nostalgia Spun Aluminum Air Cleaner for $39.99.+$8.00 postage. Put it on, took it off. It will be for sale this coming summer at a parts meet for $10.00. Their museum looks cool though, I'll give 'em that much. As for the Roadster....BORING 2nd Mortage on the house stuff....
Although my 32 roadster isn't a steel body (i don't care by the way) it owes me £15.400 which in $$$'s is $23,804 I did everything myself apart from the t******* which a buddy cut me a fantastic deal on. I'm completely happy with it.
That's a good looking car Langly and the only difference in price between your car and the price of it with a steel body would be the difference in the prices of the bodies. Probably about 7K US if I guess right.
