Hey there gang, My Brother and I are headed to San Antonio to watch my Nephew graduate from Air Force boot camp. We are looking for a few places to take him and have some fun. We would also like some decent off the beaten path restaurants to check out. Recommendations please. Anything happening event wise today through Thursday? Any shops on the "Must see" list while we are there?
well the river walk/alamo are great... but when i grad. from the af familey sat in stand and we marched by... only had a few min. with them as we were still processing out to our next base... check in to this to see if it has change(20 some years ago)... be for you make the trip........ tom
Go to the Esquire Bar....................the longest bar east of the Pecos River. If you like Mexican food this place serves traditional home-cooking that's as good/better than I've ever eaten in the US or Mexico. It's only a few blocks from the W. Military Drive gate at Lackland. Taqueria Arandis 7055 West Military Drive, San Antonio, TX 78227-2939 (210) 673-6707 ‎
****s on the Riverwalk. El Marcao downtown for shopping. SA is very tourist oriented. Call the Covention and Visitors Bureau and ask for an info pack http://visitsanantonio.com/index.aspx
Try the Liberty Bar; Food, beer, wine etc. http://www.yelp.com/biz/liberty-bar-san-antonio Sam's Burger Joint; Food, beer, music http://www.yelp.com/biz/sams-burger-joint-san-antonio a block down from the liberty bar. Also while you are in that area you cannot miss the Old Pearl Brewery. Also, Rudy's BBQ http://www.yelp.com/biz/rudys-country-store-and-bar-b-q-san-antonio Mexican food breakfast, try this place everyone at Lackland calls Mexican Hooters http://www.yelp.com/biz/rositas-cafe-san-antonio A good dive bar; http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-mix-san-antonio I'm from San Antonio, but I live in North Carolina (****s) there are a ton of more places I can reccomend, but these may be some standouts for me..
Or if you want to venture further, you have to go to Gruene Hall, Texas Oldest Dance Halls http://www.yelp.com/biz/gruene-hall-new-braunfels-3
If you're in San Antone, the Alamo is a must. It's part of Americana. Kinda disappointing seeing it amidst all the commercialization, but awe inspiring inside. No admission fee. Food - Rudy's is good for lunch, but if you want more of a sit down meal, try the County Line. There's one along the Riverwalk, but it's kinda commercialized. There's another out on the Loop that's more homey. Hot Rods - visit Vintage Air. Friendly folks who'll most likely give you a look around. There's always hot rods around and they'll be able to direct you to the local cruise in spots. USAF - give the nephew a pat on the back!
The Bun n Barrel off of Austin highway is an old 50's burger joint with good shakes. http://www.bunnbarrel.com/ The Pig Stand on Broadway is always a good place to eat. Usual tourist stuff down on the river walk. River Center Mall Not a whole lot of car stuff going on right now down here.
Yup, it has changed. We spent today on Base Liberty, then tomorrow we can take him out on the town as long as we stay inside the loop. Thanks for the tips guys.
When I was in basic and was let out on the town for the one day the first stop that a lot of us made us McDonalds. We then walked around the river and went to the Alamo. McDonalds was a real treat after only eating chow hall food every day. That was 21 years ago so like you said I am sure things have changed. I know that the family that visited people when I was there only had a few hours to spend together. I really liked the city when I was there and it is on my list of places to visit again. I will have more time to spend the next time.
