Okay so the old owner of my 1953 Chevy painted the grille and bumpers. Well at first look I dint think he used primer so I grabbed some aircraft stripper and started on the grill and after the paint came off, I hit primer and have stopped. Know anything to move the primer without damaging what chrome is left? I did see some chrome where the paint had wore off so I know it's there.

Steel wool will scratch the chrome underneath. I've had some luck with lacquer thinner, I also had some luck dampening the end of a rag with thinner and then polishing the area with buffing compound. The combination of the compound and the thinner took the primer right off and does not scratch.

NO STEEL WOOL ON CHROME! I don't care how many O's it has, it's going to scratch, your rubbing steel against a soft plated surface and you will ruin it. Patience will go a long way here.

    Thanks Squablow for the advice?

  14. Quite possible your chrome was "scuffed" before painting. Hard to make paint, even primer, stick to chrome. May also find some pits worked with body filler. As a general rule, people don't paint over good chrome. Good luck.

If you want the chrome to remain thicker, use thinner. If you use any sort of abrasive, it'll make the chrome thinner whereas the thinner won't.

There are several ways to do what you're wanting to do, But as Steve said, most people in their right mind don't paint good chrome. Personaly I'd go with the thinner route and use cola and tin foil to polish it after removing the paint, but chances are, it's fubar'd already.

That's what my Mom tole me her big brothers used to do way back when. I've been using tin, or aluminum foil on chrome for years. ball it up, and make with the elbow grease.

You get paint gun cleaner also... Soak a rag in it and wrap it up with plastic, let it sit. YOu'll be able to wipe it off in about an hour

Naval Jelly! Works great for rusted chrome also. Only takes a few minutes to setup.

So if I read that right, the paint remover didn't remove the primer? FYI, the Aircraft paint remover will not hurt chrome plating at all. I have stripped many a painted over chrome job, even with ****py chrome underneath; it doesn't hurt the chrome.

I used to do this all the time in the shop use thinner on cuts ,then about a year ago I got a Basils ( sic?) bacterium from doing it ,almost lost my arm till it was all said and done, it stops the pain and itching because the thinner destroys all your nerve endings and gets in your blood!

Not sure if it will hurt the chrome or not, but how about brake fluid? It does wonder for removing paint, but doesnt hurt chrome as far as I know.. If im not mistaking chrome isn't as porous as paint..
