I just finished putting power windows in the doors on my 49 shoebox. I've also shaved the outside door handles. I'd like to install a remote to lower the window from the outside so I can get into it. Now I have to leave a window down or use the manual release cable I've got on one of the doors when I forget to leave the window down. Does anybody have any suggestions on what unit to use or any other advice?
Run a cable from inside the door to under a fender or under the hood that you can manually pull to open the door, also think about the battery going dead and the power window not working, will you be able to jump the car?
Put a push to open ****on in the gas filler door . then charging lugs under the back bumper just in case your battery dies...
I added another set of wires from the window motor to a switch located outside the car, then I roll the windows down and use the inside handles to open the doors. So I have two switches to the windows, one inside and one hidden outside.
Years ago when I removed the exterior door handles from a Model A I ran a single one way ****on switch under the visor on the drivers side to roll down the window,,just press and hold the ****on. When I had no exterior door handles on my 1939 ford convertible I used a mercury switch along with a magnet,,,to pop the door open. Lots of yaws to do it,,,I no longer dislike door handles and find them very usefull,,, HRP
The important thing is that you already have a manual door release to keep you from being locked out. Now it's just a matter of where you want an electric switch positioned or a remote instead. The remote requires that you keep it with you, or in your wife's/girlfriend's pocketbook, where a mounted switch doesn't. I personally have an exterior mounted switch that I can reach easily. The remotes are a bit pricey too. Click here: AUTO-LOC PWRE75 2 WIN EXPS. REMOTE WINDOW KIT $159.95 BUY ONLINE
Not sure I'd be putting any electrical switch near the filler neck of a gas tank. I'd be very afraid of a minute spark (in the switch) triggering a rather warm and toasty end to your vehicle. Not saying I'm right ... just saying.
The car still has an exterior gas cap, no filler door. The exterior switch is something I hadn't thought of, but I'd still like a remote. As far ad the battery going dead I can get into the engine compartment where the battery is but you have to know how. It's not easy.
