Projects The "Keep on Truckin' " '34 Chevy Build

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by cactus1, Jun 16, 2009.

  1. Ryan, I hope so. I dont know much about the engine or the tranny, though it seems to run good on the stand and the tranny will run through all the gears. My fingers are crossed.

How's yours coming along? I know you were driving it this summer.

You should be fine with your engine and tranny.........Think positive.....That's what I told kept telling myself right before I fired mine up for the first time........As far as what I have....or I should say haven't accomplished this winter.....I need to finish my tranny tunnel and the floor will be done....Need to tidy up some wiring.....Need a grill insert.....Need to redo my throttle linkage....Also need to make some sort of cover for the bed......Then on my '57 Chevy wagon....I need to drop the rear end down and replace a couple of shims and change u-joints. I spent about 3 months straight day and night in the garage....plus working 50-55 hours a week. I took a break for the last couple months.....I did get the truck running well enough for my wife and daughter to drive it in our local car cruise this fall.....That was my goal all along since my truck and car were on the t-shirts this year. I hope to get going after New Years and get things finished up, excluding paint anyway. This picture was taken in March......The engine and tranny are just sitting in it.....Nothing is really bolted down....It was just for picture purposes....But, this is what the front of the t-shirts looked like for our car show. Oh yea.....I need to get that door handle on still.

Wow, great work on the frame! Especially like the boxing plates at the front, do they angle in towards the front? Dig the bolted up piece around the tranny area too. Have you decided on a color for the frame?

Cool Ryan! That is a great picture. That wagon is dope!

Thanks Jeff! The boxing plates are straight. The frame is strange in the way that it folds to make the thinner section for the horns. It's like they just left the extra material. Kind of weird, but I decided I liked the looks of it. You can see it better in the video below.

I am starting to bodywork the frame a bit now. Whoever took all the brackets off the frame (not me) was a bit heavy-handed with the grinder and gouged it up a bit so I need to skim some areas. I am now trying to decide between semi-gloss or satin black for the frame itself. The rest of the suspension parts will be glossy black.

I bolted my frame to my geared engine stand via some exhaust clamps so I could get to all the nooks and crannies without standing on my head!

  5. I like the make shift rotisserie. I need to come up with something similar for the painter. My cab is welded to my frame because of the cage. I am thinking about modifying my engine hoist and buying a second one(?) and bolting it to some channel.

  6. Yeah, it worked out pretty well. Don't be tempted to tie the stands together though. The fronts tend to lift as it goes upside down due to the angle of the heads.

    Happy X-mas everybody!

Looks Great I have a 34 Chevy truck would be happy to share a few pics but for some reason I can never get them to post on here. I built my truck or should I say rebuilt it since it was orginally hot rodded in the early 70's. Great to see another 34-35 Chevy hit the road. You don't see many of them around. Good luck with you build.

  9. Thanks bud! That's a great looking truck you have! (pics in profile) and thanks for the message.

I have been working on the frame and it is in primer. Well actually I put a coat of paint on it last night ,but I don't have a good pic. I am mainly bumping this so I can post from the new TJJ App. Thanks Ryan![IMG]

  10. And here it is in semi-gloss black. It will get another coat. The axles/ spindles, etc. Are gloss black.[IMG]

Cool truck. Im a 36-8 freak, GMC's --mine will have a 3"sectioned 36 GMC nose/grill with the bottom trimmed just like you did and the gmc sides.
Im workin on mine again-even if only on the copy machine at the moment. I use 35-40 ford frames because they are light as hell --have the right curves for what im tryin to do-and cheap and avalable! -just have to take out the stock middle x brace and narrow to right width-box and redo the X brace. I did my own Corvette c5 crossmember jig so now i can make CM's from 37 to 42"" wide. ill probablt stick the 181 merc 140 hp in to start and add the roller cam/valve train and port EFI.

No panhard rod on the rear end? Will the angled coilovers keep it centered ok on a light truck? Looking to do something similar on my T, and I want some room for a little back seat for my boy. Any extra stuff I can do without will help me with some extra room.

  23. No coil-overs. It is buggy sprung at both ends. The shackles should control the side to side movement ( hopefully!) Haha!

Looks like you were inspired by the 33-4 ford on the rear section of the frame

  26. Thanks Chad! At the risk of jinxing myself, yes! I am trying to take it to the Roundup. You and I have a lot of work to do buddy!

    Busted! Haha!

  27. I aimost forgot , " these aren't the droids you're looking for. Move along, move along." haha! John, I wanna make it levitate like yours does!!
