I can't help it, summers on the way and I need a fix, I'll be layed up for the HAMB Drags (ankle overhaul) so the only fuel I'll smell will be from my Zippo.
Help a brother out. Thanks, GO-rilla.

    I hope this helps!!
This is the "Thunder Road Special" flathead dragster.
It's a friends that I get to help on. We run it 2 or 3 times a year at the Nostalgia Drags at New England Dragway in Epping, NH.

Charlie Brown's "Wild Hare Racing" FH digger. Sweet little car that ran 10s and 11s with a mild 276-inch alky motor. Sorry we can't see the Arnie Roberts 'chute-pack tail. Charley owned a tavern called The Wild Hare, hence the team name and the Miller sponsorship. With a full keg aboard for post-race socializing, Charley's trailer was the focal point for the FH/I class in Goodguys/VRA racing -- until they pulled the plug on the class because it wasn't interesting enough . . . 10-15 cars every event, with the slowest ones running 12s, great ongoing FH vs. In-liner drama, pit area second favorite with fans (after AA/F), not one no-fire during eliminations in three years of racing, not one oil-down EVER, best in-pits Satruday night campout/BBQ/bench-racing sessions -- just not as interesting as 18-20 second peg-leg door slammers. Several FH cars that were being built at the time of the GG/VRA decision were parted out for other projects, and several running cars were sold, including the "Wild Hare" chassis.

That is bitchin'! Man thats what I love, GRASSROOTS!

  11. That was a shame that GG did that.

I was kinda bummed that they got rid of "center steer altereds and dragsters" in their Hot Rod class. Their reasoning is that these types of cars should easily be able to race in their 9.60 NE class... true, but we aren't ready to step up... so we have to sit out. :(

But next year... next year we'll be there with bells on.

Also, now they do not allow ANY car that runs slower than 12.99 to compete... all in the name of speeding up the show...

"Progress" in a "Nostalgia" drag racing association seems like an oxymoron.
    Sam.

Here's John Spradlin's car from HAMB drags #1, where he recieved a trophy for fastest time (150 mph and change). John lives in Billings, MO (about half way between the MoKan track and Springfield. John's in the white T-shirt.

He had the car torn down for a thorough refurbishing and wasn't able to get it put together in time for last year's drags, but I'm guessing he'll be there again this summer.

It's a '65 RCS chassis with a carbureted SBC on gas, but I happen to know John has both a Hilborn injection unit, and a 6-71 huffer on the shelf in his shop, so who knows?

    You're right Sam.

There are also a bunch of old dragsters and altereds that were built using nominal tube specs that won't certify today. At Bowling Green last year, NHRA ran a 10.10 index for those cars. Personally, I would rather watch/drive an "outdated" center steer car than Super Gas running essentially the same ET. They gotta be safer than a 9 second Hyubusa. Even running 10s you still wear all the same safety gear., arm restraints, etc.

I have a 200 chrome molly front engine dragster chassis. It's for sale or trade. I want to go bonnevile racing instead of dragracing.I hope to have it at the march meet in the swap meet.

    Hey guys,

I haven't seen a reply to GO-rilla's question as to building one po' boy. Obviously you don't want to do it on the cheap cheap but ZMan was telling me about the dragsters and had expressed an interest in building one. While I'm still trying to line up my first project, it would be really cool to build one of those. So anyone have a ballpark figure?

    Thanks,
    Biscuit

That's hard to put a figure on. Depends on how fast you wanna go and how safe you wanna be. What is it that you wanna run? A dragster? It also depends on your fabrication skills. If you have to buy a chassis, you'll be spending some jack.

I went to a place called Bolton Chassis this weekend and talk to Mr. Bob Bolton (hope that is the right spelling) Sorry Bob. Man this guy is a PRO! he only builds slingshots Jr. fuel type, what a cool dude! My dad always told me about him and we finally went there Sat. lotsa history. This ain't a pitch but he seemed reasonable to me. I love the old guys they make me feel good about what I love. I work metal every chance I get and just to see his welds, they are just plain art. You know, and the guy works out of a 2 car garage at the end of a dirt road in BFE Oklahoma, NHRA cert with a shop you can eat of the floor in. It just goes to show talent is hiding every where.

  26. NHRA Legal? I don't see anyone building one from scratch for less than 10-15k... that's with used stuff.

Buying an old car and updating it... used motor stuff... MAYBE you could do one for around 10k... that's with all the safety stuff.

This is coming from someone who has just finished an altered... this is with a motor that Tim already had (we just freshened up with a cam and injection...) a $100 rear end... a $500 steel body... a $2000 tranny and converter... $40 swap meet slicks... but when we add up all the reciepts (including $400 trailer) we have about 15k in it... the small stuff adds up QUICK! Fire suit, belts, helmet, neck collar, gloves, arm restraints, SFI approved tranny shield, flex plate shield, harmonic balancer, seat belts... roll cage padding...

You can also ask Shag about racing a digger on the CHEAP... it's a lot of work... and the word CHEAP is relative. If we had to build a motor from scratch... we'd have another 4-5k in it... and if we had to build a 9" rear end from scratch... we'd have another $2500 in it (pumpkins are 1k, housing and axles $900 and brakes another 3-400 $$$)

    Sam.

Apparently nobody was payin' enough attention to the HAMB classifieds I had my entire operation,Digger(8.80) car 24'enclosed Trailer and all but tools turn keylisted for $10,000.LOL

It's okay though now it belongs to a virgin in Kalamazoo.

Oh well.I think my ass. Eddie and I could put together some kind of safe, possibly even a certifiable mild steel chassis package for a reasonable price if there was enough interest.:D

I've got about 17k in mine. Most of it in the nailhead. I got lucky and bought the car as roller and it had a current cert. So I'd say if you can do it for less than 20k your doing good. We are running NHRA pro nostalgia. Car must be certified and run 7.99 or faster. Last year the field was cuting off at 7.42, There are some fast diggers up here.
