Sounds like you plan to run these heads as-is due to budgetary considerations, but if you decide to dig into them later, a reasonably skilled porter can unshroud the intake valve with a stone. When porting them, you do want to exercise caution in the area I mentioned earlier, as it is crack-prone. With some skilled grinding in the chambers and pockets and some straightening and clean-up along the long side, this head will flow around 240-250 cfm@.600. And the 2.02s and 1.60s of course. Took that for granted, but I should make it clear.

Screw in studs and guide plates would be a big plus!! Corvette L-82 heads had those in later years also....

screw-in studs are pretty much essential.

IMHO , those are throw away heads these days. Vortecs are cheap and better and you can get them drilled for old style valve covers and intakes no prob.

here's a dated rate card for a machine shop. new aftermarket vortecs are $130 each delivered w/guides and seats

labor is so expensive who can afford to have their heads rebuilt

Thanks Johnny1290 for the price guide, but like I said, Vortecs are not what I wanted. Everyone's got their opinion on what you should run and that's how it should be. They're just not what I personally wanted.

It's like telling someone to put an auto in their car when they want a 4 speed. Sure it may be easier and cheaper, but if it's not what you want - what's the point!

Anyway, I got these heads for a song so I don't mind putting a bit of money into them if need be. With the condition and how clean these heads are, they're pretty much bolt on.

I appreaciate all the replys and insight from all you guys...it really helped me out.:)

    thatta boy:)

what cam you plan to run......PM me your contact info, I have a set of studs and guide plates you can have, should be really cheap to have the stud bosses tapped and machined for them, its good insurance on those heads.

I know, I know, there are a LOT of guys on HAMB who really have absolutely no grasp as to what traditional cars are all about. Vortecs, AFR's and darts and so on are great, but have NO PLACE on a traditional car. They are EASILY identifiable as not being period parts. I have built motors with aftermarket heads, am putting aftermarket heads on my o/t CHEVY II (o/t means off-topic, or inappropriate for this board). But they have NO PLACE on a traditional car. The guy building this car "gets it", the rest dont.

  9. Our old Nova ran 12's with a mild 400 with old fule 462 heads with no accessory holes. I like the look, no argument Vortex are better. But on the other hand their are 40 years of intake manifolds and rocker covers out their cheep. as fo cracks try "Spot check" its 3 bspray cans one is a penitrant it sprays white than you hit it with developer and the cracks turn dark blueish.

1.94 are still good, most folks can't tell the difference in performance. You might still check the date codes, these are popular with folks building a numbers matching car if you are looking to sell

Bingo! A couple years ago I picked up a set of 461's with studs, guide plates, and port work done for waaay cheap from a guy going with aftermarket heads. I'll use aftermarkets on hi-po 350's but I've got a 327 in the corner that I'll need the camel humps for, no other heads will do.

Actually, I just re-read the original post. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I replied, I think I was half asleep.

You didn't ask for my opinion on camel hump heads, you asked for advice in how to pick a good set.

Sounds like you got a good one, and for $100, how can you go wrong? good score.

    Well said!;)

Exactly. If this was a race car where I wanted to squeeze out every last ounce of power, I would for sure go with aftermarket heads. This is a frickin Model A Coupe...I just want as traditional as I can get without breaking the bank.

No problem Johnny1290...that price sheet does open a persons eyes as to how fast things can add up!
