Miami Hollywood Speedway

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by dannyuscg, Apr 10, 2009.

  1. I moved to Hollywood in 74 (I was 6) and just moved to NC last year. Never heard of that track. Was that all the way out by the Sportatorium way out in the boonies (back then)?

    Cool old pictures.

remember the kids would scoot across the rafters at every concert ?
    the good old "sport hole".

and there was a very short circle track next to the drag strip. i never seen any of those races though.

now there's new homes out there.... sad.

Grew up in S.FLA - Never went to any races there, but went to a few concerts in the Sportatorium.

Just back in S.Fla a week or two ago for a funeral - drove out to a friend's house - Pines & 196th - holy shit! I didn't know there was anything but swamp out there! Don't think I'd ever been past Flamingo.

I grew up in that area as well, we would go out to Hollywood Speedway after work on Thursday nights for "Run what ya Brung". Loads of memories there... I lived on Flamingo Road back then and it was literally in the swamp, now it's practically downtown....sad.

"very short circle track next to the drag strip "?
Actully, it was 3/8 mile oval, very close to a 1/2,ran there many times, even got a bounty put on me for winning 9 mains in a row.
Biggist prob with the places was super greed by owners, chaced off promoter after promoter by adding extra fees for all kind of BS to the rent tel they give up,and the food stand run only by the owners sucked with left over crap from Calder horse track,so fans had to sneak food in.
The track it's self was great, but all dirt pits.

so this track became the moroso hollywood track? if i did i ran on it a few times in my o/t car. still have the newspaper article hanging on my wall that my mom sent me. if you want to know what it is now. when you are heading west of 75 on pines blvd and you see a sign that says "spring Valley" that was it. that was the first jobsite i worked on when i moved to fla in the 90's

Hard to believe Miami was once just like the rest of the country, guess we lived there about 35 years too late. Thanks for the pics!

Dick Moroso also ran the Miami-Hollywood track under lease before it closed. I'm pretty sure it did have his name on it during that time.

Went there for a QuickSilver Messenger Service concert in the early '70s. I remember my buddy Normspeed telling my expecting wife to keep her hand over he cup of soda so no one could slip anything into it. Far out man.

Moved out of Lauderdale in '76. A few years back I bought a engine from a guy way out west of Lauderdale. When he gave me the address I said, so you live out in the Everglades? He said, so you haven't been here in a few years have you. I think they have built all the way out to AndyTown by now.

According to Marty Snowball who still lives in Rolling Oaks off Griffen Rd it is solid buildings from Andytown to Hialeah. We used to street race on Hollywood Blvd & Flamingo Rd when it was all swamp land. I can recall thinking that if I had any brains Id buy this land up. Naw, never be nothing but swamp in my lifetime. When I was 15 we used to go to Medley & Hallandale Speedway circle tracks after 9 when they let you in free & watch Bobby Allison and Red Farmer race. Sometimes we'd sneak into the field behing Medley and watch from behind a piece of plywood 3 feet from the modifieds. Seemed safe at the time, what could go wrong ! Damn it was fun though ! If they'd let them there would be solid houses clear across the Everglades by now, thank God they didnt. I left for Montana in 1980 when the whole area was turning into a third world country. Martys son Robert still races but the old man is retired with a competitive B/SA 71 Mustang 429 SCJ stocker in his garage
