When I first got my Rivi it wouldnt start straight off the bat. Figured the fuel pump so i replaced to a brand new mechanical duel pump, had the carby rebuilt, replaced plugs, points, condenser, new battery, gave it a tune in the garage and thought it would do the trick. I just cant seem to get it right. Every time i need to start the car, i have to either pour gas down the carb, or squirt a good couple times engine starting fluid. Which annoys the f#$k out of me so i don't drive it that often. The other day went to start it by pouring gas down the carb and gas comes out these two holes located on the front face of the carb?? What are these two holes?? i got the car running, and sprayed starter fluid into the two hoels and the engine stumbles a bit, sorta like a vaccuum leak I guess. Anyone know what the deal here is? Next question, Anyone located in or around Riverside,CA who wouldnt mind checkin it out for me and running through it with me? I really want to learn what the f^%k is going on with this so I can play with it and get the ol girl out and about. Cheers, Paul. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
How long has it been since the carb has been rebuilt, because of the looks of the gaskets doesn"t look to be new or clean at all and what kind of gasket do you have under the carb?Just asking, because that carb sure doesn"t look very clean for a recent rebuild.
Must just be the flash and the zoom, cos the carb is nice and clean, sat in a cleaning tank for a couple days. Gaskets are all new too. Rebuilt about 3 months ago and like i said i have hardly driven it cos I can't get it running right. Any ideas what the two holes are and how they relate to the carbs operation? I have a mid sixties lincoln with a carter and it doesnt have those two holes on it.
Those two holes are to let gas vapors escape when the car is sitting hot, not running, otherwise the vapors would go into the intake flooding the engine on a hot restart.
No it sounds like the accelerator pump isn't working.Look down the choke side with the engine off and work the throttle, you should see the little nozzles squirting. If they don't either something is plugged or the pump itself is stuck.
is your choke adjusted properly so it closes when the engine is cold? I have a Riv that exhibits the same characterists, but I just give it a squirt of gas and away we go.
Hey. You are getting close. When you shut the car off it is still hot enough to perk the fuel. So it evaporates. then when you try to restart there is no fuel left in the bowl. I would try a new heat isolator gasket between the carb and manifold. Let me know if you want to discuss other ways you could be losing fuel.
Thanks for the links and help guys. I think i need to have a real good look at the choke too. I think the original choke was operated from the heat rising up the tube from the exhaust manifold, but the curretn choke is electrical as it has the two wiring tabs on it. Maybe its not wired up correctly. How can I check electrically and accurately if the choke is working or not? Do i measure resistance or something, or attach to a 12v battery and listen for a "click" liek a relay or watch for moevement?? Thanks again guys.
This sounds exactly like what is happening. I might get me a new gasket and give it a shot. What are some of the other ways you mention??
