Anybody running a t5 in a f1? Im interested to know if the swap is worth wile, I know the best fit is one out of a early s10. Im running a stock flathead 8 and stock 392 diff. I want to cruiz at 65 without winding the old flattie too high. What has been your exsperiance with this setup? Ken
I like it. I have a 49 F1 with a flathead, T5, Dana 44 with 4.27:1 gears. At 65 the tach is about 2200 rpm. I like it. The t5 i have is a world class from a Mustang. I put a S10 tail shaft and shifter on it. It also has a 3.35 1st gear. I thing it work well. My flat head isnt stock. It has 2 carbs, headers, isky Jr cam. And the truck isnt all that light, i like the combo. I didnt use the s10 trans because they have a real weird gear combo. ( lots of people like the s10 gear combos,I drove one and to me you had to shift in to 4th or 5th way too soon. That why I used the Mustang) Mustang trans was more $$ but I felt it was worth it. Swap is easy. I used the Cornhuskers Rod and Custom bell housing adapter, stock clutch pedal--straight foward swap. Some people say it too hard, but I can't see why. I used a TCI trans crossmember (it was a bolt in). Had my trans built by Hanlon Motorsports (back east) and had it shipped to California. No one around here sounded too intersted in building the trans, so I went with them after some research. I say do it!!!
Good choice. Use the search function and you'll find plenty of T5 equipped flattys here. I think the S10 T5 is .70 to 1 in 5th gear 3.92 (gear) X .7 (overdrive) = 2.74 (effective ratio) 2.74 ratio with a 28" tire @ 65mph = 2137 rpm
Look up Tom Landon for his adapter and he is a real nice guy with lots of help on the T5 swap. My swap has been very straight forward. Go for it!
