Very Nice! Special effect's with just a dash of green. Even sweeter, you were there sanding your tail off.

Thanks for posting the pics Mike.
I just spent 5 hours color sanding the roof, my arms are aching bad.
I'm glad y'all dig it, I hope it doesn't look too bling.
Besides the modern materials, there's nothing on the car that wasn't
available in the '50s, i.e metalflake, pearl and clear.
It's probably gonna take 2-3 weekends of solid work to color sand the
    *****.
I can't wait to see what it looks like with all the chrome and trim back
    on her.
I couldn't have done it without my pal Sean's help, he's the one that
    sprayed it.

  19. Looks great man.

And, a ****load cheaper than the new color shift mirage stuff.

The pearl was PPG green, it cost $17.00 an ounce, we used one plastic teas**** per quart of mixed clear. There's enough left over to do three Yugos.
I'm done with Finishmaster, from now on I'm going to Ben's Paint Shop on HWY 441, those guys aren't ***holes.

Congrats, great job on the paint.

I hope to have finished paint someday on mine.

The first thing I thought when I saw those pics was
"whew, there was alot of block sanding and prep that
went into that". I hope you post sometime how you
did the prep work for that.

The combination of purple and green definitely makes it look like a version of contemporary color-change paint. Two closer hues would have lessened the effect. Despite the '50s materials, the color palette is now.

Once it's dressed up with chrome and whitewalls, you'll push it back in time and I'll be the lone soul who gave you any flack about it.

It looks real nice! I definately like the green pearl & how it sets off the purple base and really makes it pop.

I'm having a real hard time block sanding this car. I've been blocking it with 1500 until it looks flat, but when I polish it it still has orange peel looking bumps.
There's three coats of clear over the pearl, but I'm afraid if I keep blocking it I'll sand right through the clear which would be a disaster.
Does anybody have any tips on what to do?
BTW, the roof came out damn close to perfect, I'll be posting some pics.
I was worried that car would look a tad 'contemporary' and I think it does. People are gonna think I painted it with that color changing **** that costs $200 a pint.
I guess I won't really be able to tell what's happening until the trim's back on.

    This car's driving me nuts.

Nads, I know it's common "knowledge" that you can sand fresh paint with 1500 grit, but I never had any luck with it. I think it's great to do if you want that "new car" look, just smoothed out orange peel. To get that ****er dead flat, you probably need to start with either 600 or 800 grit. The GTO I just did, I started with 800, and I've still got the slightest bit of texture in the finish. 600 always gives me dead flat. Then I progress to 1000 and then 1500. It DOES take a lot of 1000 cutting to get out the 600 scratches!
It's tough to say what to do next. Personally, I think if you didn't do a real lot of cutting with the 1500, you still have a lot of clear to work with. IF you think you really cut a lot of the clear off, I would do a test spot...do a 1000 grit cut, switch to 1500, and then buff it. See if it looks good, you'll get away with a 1000 cut, even if you may not have enough clear to do a rougher cut. Only other option is if you can find a bodyshop with a "mil gauge" that measures paint thickness. They might be able to tell you how much you have to play with. Though it will measure the thickness of the primer, base and pearl coats, as well as the clear, and you might not really have a precise measure of just the clear.

Nads, screw what the others think of it as long as it's what you want. I think it looks cool. Once the trim and wheels and stuff are back on they will be droolin. later shawn

Nads have you ever tryed a DA sander with a sponge pad and 2500 grit.or if its heavy orange peel 1500 but go easy ,The painters in work use this a lot .You really need a air DA with plently of soapy water and keep away from the edges..
I know what its like ,Polishing is a ***** Good luck with it
