Moon disc dilemma and question

    Here's my dilemma: I installed a set of screw-on Moon discs today. I even took the tires off the rim, drilled and tapped 3 holes per wheel. I had a hell of a time getting the tires to seal when mounting. When I got the tires on the car and start to put on the discs air is leaking thru the holes in the rims as I was screwing them on. The leaks seemed to stop as I tightened them so I took the car for a spin around the 'hood purposely pushing them to fail. They seem to be holding.
    Should I have not drilled all the way thru the rim? I would think its o.k. because the install intructions say to apply silicon around the holes and supply nylon washers with the screws. Did I screw up (no pun intended)?
    I hate that feeling of not trusting your ride especially since I'm gonna drive it to Vegas. Anyone ever have this problem or have an opinion?

    it's because we are both old and married .....actually i just finshed eating after a long day .......

    ya know the ones with the orange on em ....actually on second thought better put em back on ....unless you plan on racing that thing at muroc ....

    only if you are done with em i will put em on the ford ...well whenever i get to it .just gotta get two more as i am not runnin skirts on it ...

    If they sealed up I wouldnt worry too much...check after a cold night...thats when they will leak...if you went through the tire even a little that will help it seal when it warms up...just bring a plug kit with ya JUST IN CASE...never plug a sidewall..but it may get ya home in a pinch.

    If you are still worried about them I'd put either clear nail polish or loctite on the screws to seal them. Enjoy the trip to Vegas, wouldn't mind seeing a pic of the whole car, the corner looks good.

    The tire doesn't seal where the screws go. They seal on the bead, 90 degrees from where you drilled the holes. Sounds strange to hear air leaking from there. I drilled mine with the tires mounted until I hit rubber and never lost any air.

    What I did with my screws to be a little more confident was to dip the tips in some black silicone before running them in. Just a little will make them airtight.

    I suppose the screws against the inside if the bead may push it in a little. My car with radials loses 10 pounds of pressure after about 3-4 weeks on two tires.

    I had the same problem with my mom disc on my '68 Bonne. I had to put an extra washer on the screws, that fixed the air leak. It drove me nuts too!
     
  9. Spray some soapy water on the screws. No bubbles, no leaks.-MIKE;)

    The trick I use is to cut the threads on the screww short enough to just go thru the rim. The air is probably coming out becauste the long screw is pushing the bead away from the rim at the side. Have been running full moons on my truck this way for about 9 years.

    Got to homeless depot and get some plumber's liquid teflon pipe seal
    It is the leak fixer.... oil,air,most anything

    You aren't sposed to put in screws long enough to go all the way through to the tubes.
    You are running tubes aren't ya?

    Also, I think Bonneville / SCTA rules require (or at least used to require, last time I read a rule bok) at least 6 fastening screws and Moon only drills the caps for 3.
    They look more like a "real hotrod" with the 6 in them, since all the "real race cars" are going to have 6, and safer too, hence the the reason for the SCTA rule.
    More screws to fall out before the hubcap becomes a James Bond - Goldfinger's - Top Hat style, lethal frisbee.

    FYI, Moon sells the discs drilled with six holes. You just need to specify when you order.
