Today, I went to get a shipping quote for a potential buyer. $115!

    It's 20"x20"x41" and weighs 25 lbs.

Since it's oversize, they had to charge me the same rate as if it was 99 lbs. (plus $25 to PACK it)

I checked out UPS, and the lowest I could find (at a commercial address) was $85.

I seriously doubt Tanks Inc paid that much to ship it to me, and can't find a receipt to show what they/I paid for shipping.

Any thoughts or input as o how I can ship something like this for a realistic price? Thanks in advance, Jesse

Was that quote at UPS, FedEx or USPS?

I shipped a 6lb. package to Findland, UPS $210, USPS $43. Big difference in price for that package.

If you have a Greyhound bus service or Amtrak near you check with them. The buyer would also have to pick it up at the station too. It needs to be a station too and not just a p***anger pickup point on both ends.

The first quote was from the local Pak n Fax shop. She called USPS and confirmed.

    The second was from UPS.

I dont think there's a Bus Depot in these parts...will have to sort that out as well. Not a bad option, never would have thought of that.

I'll have to try to find something else. THanks again, more options are appreciated.

  6. Are you sure on the 20" high? seems kinda tall, that is what is throwing it into oversize. fed ex is cheaper than ups and usps is cheaper yet. then for the large things greyhound is way cheap!

I learned the hard way today the difference between Fedex ground and frieght. Anything under 150 lbs is ground and anything above (my package was 152 lbs) is frieght. Only $330 bucks to go from WI to VA:eek:.
Should've made two boxes instead of one, but I worry every time I ship stuff (which is going to be less and less)

Where were you gonna ship it to? I have a UPS account to get a quote for you to compare. I used my account in CA to you in Fl, with your dimensions and weights and it came up $98.56. Making it 20x15x41 knocks it down 15 bucks. Can you make the package smaller? Just a thought.

Hello, you could check with the Post Office. Just give them the dimensions so they can give you a price. You can send it ground to save, also get a large box from a buisness or body shop for free, they would only toss out the box. Crease it by hand to wrap the tank, then make two ends that would slide down on the inside of the box.

No matter who you ship with "DO NOT SAY IT IS A GAS TANK"!!!

If you have no luck zip me a PM, Bob

2x on the bus. Try www.busfreighters.com. I shipped a 93# metal box of QC gears from Philly to suburban Chicago for $60.

USPS Priority Mail is what I would use....they have a size limitation of 108" I think...and that is length plus girth...the girth is like measuring around the box like a belt around your middle...I think you might be under 108" unless they changed the size...go to the USPS website and check it ou..they also have a place where you can get a quote by punching in the particulars...

I was going to send it to CT. The gas tank is brand new, never been used.

It's wrapped in bubble wrap and the rst of the box is stuffed w/ foam peanuts.

I don't think I can get the size of it any smaller, or I'll risk damaging the fibergl*** body panel.

There's some great advice in here already, and I appreciate it. Can't believe how much it costs to mail something so light. I could damn near drive the tank to the guy for that price.

Now I'm just trying to get a good idea on how to ship this, or anything else, in the future.

Not a huge hot rod market in my area, so shipping is life for me.

Your local pack and ship place is charging you more than the actual freight. That's how they make their money. If it's a local UPS store, same deal. They are NOT UPS,just a franchise using the name.Find your real UPS hub,and the hours that they are open for walkins. When I did a lot of Ebay, the difference was staggering.Never pay those places to pack it,either. My closest real UPS accepted walk in John Q Public from only 3:30 til 6:30 pm...well worth checking out

Yeah, it's 'disappointing' when we find freight charges are higher than we prefer. But a little less emotion and a little more thought would reveal that the rates are not as arbitrary as many claim. As to weight vs size.........if you had a certain amount of space available on a truck, plane whatever, and it cost a certain amount to operate that vehicle over a specified distance, you too would come up with a formula that struck a balance for weight and size to make that shipment pay it's true cost of being moved. If you ship a lightweight, but bulky item, it's taking up space normally used by several smaller packages, the majority of which will be heavier by volume, and therefore paying a higher rate than you propose to pay. Won't happen whether it UPS, FED EX or you, if you plan to stay in business.

And for the fellow who said "it's not his fault he lives in point A and the recipient lives in point B"...........well, you should have complained when UPS, FED EX et al FORCED you, no doubt at gunpoint, to live where you live. Yep it's THEIR fault!

Try as you might, it's difficult to live in that alternate universe. Embrace reality and you'll be much happier.

One more vote for Fedex if you don't want to send it on the dog.
Greyhound shows to be Right at 50.00 from Pensacola, Fl to Bridgeport, ct that I used as an example on Greyhound though.

If you were to go to Fedex.com and create an account, you need to come up with a business name. You can get the rates and print you own shipping labels and either have the package picked up or drop it off at Fedex or a drop site.
Just to check prices I went on my account and plugged in the package weight and size and pulled up Chicago as I had an address in my account for there and the cost of shipping that package from Yakima, Wa to Chicago was 64.50 It shouldn't be anymore than that from Fl to CT

I checked prices to ship a set of '55 Pontiac bumpers with UPS, FedEx, USPS and Grayhound. Grayhound was the cheapest by far .... and they take irregular shapes (meaning unboxed.)

  24. real world pricing just two weeks ago....... pair of 15x15 mags, Chicago to Portland, UPS $58.12. Using same box and packing material, shipped same mags Portland to Milwaukee,Wi., USPS $37.20. Creative packing and keeping weight under 70lbs gets that e-ticket ride at USPS.

That's dimensionally too big to ship USPS reasonably. Anything where length (longest dimension) plus girth (once around the other two dimensions) is over 108" it gets super expensive at the post office. Fedex will ship up to 130" measured the same way without going oversize. And those pack and ship places like the UPS store or Mailboxes INC are a huge ripoff, pack it yourself and drop it off at one of their real locations.

Also cheaper if your buyer has a non-residential address to ship to (a business) I would think you could ship that through regular Fedex ground for less than $50, put up the zip codes to go with it.

  26. No getting around it folks ...

If you do an internet search, you will find $5.00 a gallon
unleaded gas prices being predicted as far back as 2007

    The latest @ http://musicifi.com/gossip/Gas-Prices-Predicted-To-Hit-5-A-Gallon-In-2012-4414023.html

No one likes it - but we will probably be seeing $4.00 a gallon
unleaded by the end of the year

Fuel is the primary cost of transport these days
whether all of us like it or not

It costs $8,000 per hour to fly a C130. I think its around $32,000 per hour for a C17. Yes, Uncle Sugar has to pay for air. It you want soemthing hauled, your unit is gonna footthe bill. Yes, I pay taxes jsut like you.

Guess how much a 727/767/747 costs? That's why yoru airfare is so pricey.

Oh well, thanks for the help fellas! I have more ammo to go off now than yesterday. Very good info to go off of for future reference. Thanks! Jesse

you are getting held up without a gun...I sent a gas tank out of an OT Ford truck for $55, included packing at the UPS store, and it was a behind the seat tank, so it was almost 6 feet long. and like 2 feet high...sent it to Tennessee from Ohio....
