Hey guys thanks for all the ardun pics and info....I am kinda surprised that they are set up nothing like the flathead V8 ardun heads......Here is the head I will hopefully be running soon. Its rebuilt and ready to go. I'm not exactly sure what head it is but I have been told (by the guy that rebuilt it) is was an Ambler or Alexander. Its just like a Cragar and uses the same rockers but it doesn't have the cut-out in the valve cover for the distributor stand. Does anyone know anything more about this head?? Thanks
As far as I know that's because they are not Arduns at all and not based any old design. They are machined billet pieces made by Norm Frick and just used the repop Ardun valve cover. Anyway I like it because of the size of the head it fills the engine bay well and evenly as it is cross flow type. My only wish it has been engineered and made better from the start.
Yes I am Ok, thank you for concern, as 97 posted I am quite away from Rocky, those poor buggers are copping it hard. At home here we have had around 30" of rain in the past 1-1/2 months but we are perched high on a rolling hill so no chance of flooding or landslides the lower areas of the valley have been warned of possible flooding over the next 24 hrs. This whole flooding is a once in a generation event.
It does not look like it is crossflow like repop ardun, was happy to sell mine before I used it to a guy back east. HnH quit selling them also at that time
I have a question about smittys mufflers. Are they a glasspack muffler, if so are cherry bombs basically the same thing? Im looking for something to put on, already have a reds header installed, my A but don't want it to loud.
Smitty's are really quiet Cherry bombs can be louder. It's not as much about the packing material and the baffling inside Go listen to some cars and see which you like.
I used 18" Cherry Bombs or their equivalent from Summit with 2" diameter tubing and not too loud but a lot of "rap" (oldtimy term for the cracking sound of exhaust especially when decelerating in lower gears. I mean nothing sounds as good as a 30.50 thumper with a funnel on it!) Just remembering the sound of a Gold Star I get a tingly feeling all over and feel like I'm going to wet my pants! May have to go out and fire up my 51 650 Triumph with out the baffles to get over it.
I've tried but unfortunately come up with nothing. Youtube doesn't really have much and no one in my area runs anything other than stock.
I like short, very short, Cherry bombs closer to the front the louder they are Pep Boys ustta sell'em in I just asked the manager he was happy to almost give them to me
You can add baffles to the muffler to make it quieter and to tune the power output (or so they say). Ron p.s. Quieter???? p.p.s. I know, I know

Yeah I know I usually follow the idea the louder the better, but I installed a radio and carry passengers sometimes so I would like to be able to listen to the radio or talk to whomever I am driving with. My truck is loud and I love it, I am runnig an open header on the A and its extremely loud. I like it but if I drive for more than 15 mins Ill go deaf. Im trying to hop up the engine but not completely rodding it out so I don't want to go to crazy.
I saw porter and was wondering what the difference between smittys and porter would be. Seems that porter are about twice the cost of smittys.

the porter has a different sound . while it is loud , it can be quit . just a thought . good luck on your hunt ............ steve
Don't mean to interrupt- But I was wondering if anyone knew of a banger expert in the metro Atlanta area- I have been working on my banger for about 6 months and i cant get it right. I just don't have the time I used to and have trouble finding a time to get it running with a 1 year old. Just for fun I thought I'd show everyone how close I am to being "finished" One with hood on and one with hood off. I have to get the leather straps to hold the hood on still though.
It is really just running like shat. I did a rebuild in the carb but sometimes it still sounds as though the car is drowning. When the choke is out (which is the only time it will run) is is shooting flames and lots of smoke. It really sounds like a timing issue when it running. I have watched lots of videos and heard a lot of A's and the all sound smoother. Mine sounds like it is running only 2 cylinders. I have checked the wiring order and that I am getting spark and both are fine. I know some are running some advance and mine is running near 0 degrees of advance. Mac- you can come on over! I can provide food and alcohol (or not) for the time. I am really just tired of it kicking me in the nuts everyday; I also just can not seem to find the time to be in the garage OR my little girl is asleep and you can see from the exhaust that turning it over would not go well with that. I just want to drive my baby. it deserves more than sitting in a garage no matter the temp outside. And one way or another it will be at the World of Wheels Atlanta this year. I do have a truck and trailer lined up but that would be an awful shame.

There are several tools that go in the spark plug hole to time your motor I have a 'True Spark' These come with several offset arms to get to the piston. This is the tool being used on an aircraft engine but you get the idea To obtain True TDC you must rotate the engine one direction then the other and divide the distance on the pully or flywheel In this way piston dwell is corrected See what you can do with Science ????
i used a tdc stop & degree wheel to get the same results . its more fun than work to me . degreeing cams etc was cool stuff ! jimski your amazing at the stuff you have ! .. steve
At first I was using the old pin in the front cover like ol Henry. But i have now moved on to the light and plate.
