The car will be ran solely at Eagle Field (unless I get some invites), Runway Drags with little to no VHT and with only 2 events a year no rubber on the runway. So I'm going with a direct drive (no trans) to and open rearend with 8 1/2" tires. I hope there's alot of tire slippage:D
WORK:eek: I wana just drive it:D Your right, we'll see.

  2. Damn! This is comeing together nicely!

That's what most of the cars ran back in the day, but it's open for discussion;)

  6. Interesting photo. I supplied an engine (BB Chevy Iron motor 468)to fellow here. Vern used to crew the car. It was an RED but had a open Olds rear in it. After Vern left to crew an alky car for awhile the "new Guy" would back the timng of on the car so it wouldnt smoke the one tire. Would rather run consitant 9.2s than inconsistant 8.85 and such. Neither of us (Vern or I)could talk the owner into a spool since he would have to have bought axles too. I always hoped the car would turn a 8.60 but with one wheel peel it wasnt likely to happen. Still i imagine first you get it running then you worry about stuff like that. Either way I am glued to the screen. I like how you "git er done!"
    Don
BTW It is funny now looking at the 8.85. Seems hohum but then till the Alky car Vern crewed showed up I think it was the only car in the 8s at our local track. Man how things change. Seems more $$$$$$$ around now.

With the logs done and on their way I finished cutting the runners and the flanges for the cylinder heads. I drew this up to help anyone who might want to build their own intake, I also found that the 2 center bolts on intake gaskets are no longer in line with the others. Apparently the gasket manufactures raised the center holes to make the gaskets universal to also fit Vortec heads so keep that in mind when using gaskets as a pattern. The last change I'd do if I were doing it again is mark my 3" hole saw center at 6 3/8" to give me some material to fit the log, I checked it with the hole saw simulating a 3" log, looks good and we'll see how it fits this week.

Hi Toymaker....I have recent experience with a inline twin. I designed and built Flathead Jacks dragster, and my wife drove the car the first season (2003). At the end of 2003 Kathy, and I went back to our own single engined car. I would be willing to advise on tune-up and anything else where I can. Tony Lloyd

  9. Hey Tony, saw the dragster in 03 at Infenion and man you did a beautiful job on that and Kathy could fly..............
can't say too much about Jack though but that's another story...............
glad to see you are here on the Hamb

There gonna be up there and maybe not the best technology but they are mine (& Carls) and I LOVE IT! People are gonna really be scratching their heads;)
I just have to decide if I'm gonna braze or gas weld with steel, I'm leaning toward Brazing because I believe there wont be as much heat.

Nice. This car is really coming together nicely. I am really enjoying seeing the home builder engineering that is going into the build. This proves that you don't need big bucks and a team to build a kick ass race car. All you need is the want and the will to get it done.

  12. Looks like I need to get you an altimeter for checking your jets..........
    .........but I like it!!!

Hi Toymaker...Lock up the rear. Open rear is not good. When you get rich and famous, two old sprint car Hilborn injectors are vastly easier to tune, with one big pump, and pill, for both engines. On the FHJ car I used separate fuel systems, including tanks. The engines were timed to fire at the same time, with no separation at all. It sounds like a big V-8. It started good, with one 12-V mini-gear reduction starter, with 18V battery. I assume he still runs them as separate units, and timed the same. I saw the FHJ car make a 177.XXX pass at the CHRR, this last fall. That car is truly the fastest flathead powered car, ever to make a pass.
Your car will be much more fun !! You are doing a great job, I hope to see it run this year. Tony Lloyd

  14. Here's what it will look like with Hilborns. Love the name on this car!!!

WOW Dean, they really laid the engines over!

  17. Runner length on your ufab looks good Rocky. I would lean toward brazing too. I brazed up a BB dodge one once. There is a pic of it on my old hemi Jeep thread somewhere as I had it sitting on there for effect. When I steel welded the six carb thing here it got too much heat but it wasnt the warp that was the problem it was the shrink which comes after the high heat of steel welding. Given the chance again i would probably quick tack with the mig then bronze up the rest.
    All the Best

  18. Jack is a fun one to deal with.

    Double or Nothing looks awsome......

Youcan slways play with the air pressure in the slicks to get them to spin, but with two motors and turbos that should not be a problem.

Hi Toymaker-----My wife Kathy and I have run the "Perry & Lloyd" Flathead Fuel Dragster since 1985. I dont know how to post a photo on this thread, but if you Google Perry & Lloyd Flathead dragster there are a few photos. The car is currently NHRA certified, and we hope to run the Dragfest at Bakersfield for our next event. I tried to send you a message earlier, but I guess it got lost. What I wanted to say, was use a 9" posi rear, it will make your life better moving the car around the shop and in the pits. Tony Lloyd

Carl, super nice works on the log manifolds!

Toymaker, I can't wait to see this one done. This is a wicked build.

I don't see how it could be any better than this! ..well, maybe if you do 2 flatheads on the next one!:D

I would tig weld with Silicon bronze rod . This will reqire less heat than steel rod and it flows like brass ,it handles vibration well also.

My son has a Tig but I don't like to wait on Him, don't know how to use it, so I'm gunna gas/braze it more than likely. Cool Digger Tony, I need to get you to bring it to Eagle Field May 21st, I'll set the rear end up with a "Poor Man's Posi" (double shim the side gears) and try that for now. The intake will all be one piece when I'm finished, I'm going out to work on them now and hope to tack them together and get a pic on the engines.

Thank you 38-Flattie, for posting the pics. There is a real good photo, taken by Robt. Brooks of our car at the Std-1320 Invitational at Inyokern Dragstrip in 2005. Tony Lloyd
