On my '64 Biscayne, the exhaust pipe comes extremely close to the air bag in the rear when I drop it all the way down. Apparently it's been like that for awhile because the the guy I bought it from, bought it already bagged. My question is, can I use the wrap for headers and wrap the exhaust pipe on both sides to prevent the pipe rubbing the bag? I could move the pipe up about an inch, but then it will be really close to the air line. Any advice on this will be greatly appreciated? Thanks, Phil
I had to do the same on my '40 chev bus. coupe because of the exhaust pipe was made too close to the master cyc. and when parked after running down the road the heat boiled the brake fluid and had to pump up the brakes befor driving off. I found some fibergl*** tape and used hose clamps on each end. No more boiling the brake fluid.
I feel like even if you wrap the pipe, if its rubbing its rubbing. It may not blow as fast, but eventually youre going to be fixing it either way. I would figure out a new way to route the exhaust or get a different header. All the header wrap will do is make a tighter fir with the bag. Maybe you could run that portion of the line with metal to avoid melting the line.
if it is a heat issue, then yes you can do it. But if it is going to rub in the bag, you will end up with a failure - guaranteed
It's at the rear of the car where the pipe goes over the axle. Could I move the pipe over and then wrap the air line? I'm wanting to prevent failure before it happens. I know there are plenty of impalas that are bagged. I'm wondering how they ran there exhaust.
If it was me, I would move the exhaust away from the bag, then reroute the airline and possibly make a heat shield to protect the airline.
I can only move it about an inch, but I guess that may be all I need. I would just have to wrap the air line. It's running right along the bottom of the fender well to the front of the car.
They make spark plug wire heat protectors. It comes in a roll and is sold at NAPA. It is similar to heat tape but you slip the wire through. Real simple and works well. ******Knuckles
x 2 i forgot about these, used them on my handbrake cables and worked a treat along with the wrap on the exhaust.
Thanks. I'm going to move the exhaust over where it's not touching the bag once lowered and then get some spark plug covers to slip over the air line. This should solve my problem.
