It's a New Year which means new ways of getting revenue...especially for cash-starved governments like California. If you live in or plan to ride through Cali this year be aware that the code has been changed and V C Section 5201 Positioning of Plates now has these stipulations:
    • "License plates shall at all times be securely fastened to the vehicle for which they are issued so as to prevent the plates from swinging, shall be mounted in a position so as to be clearly visible, and so that the characters are upright and display from left to right, and shall be maintained in a condition so as to be clearly legible. The rear license plate shall be mounted not less than 12 inches nor more than 60 inches from the ground, and the front license plate shall be mounted not more than 60 inches from the ground..."
Considering license plate infractions can start in the neighborhood of $250, being aware of these changes is top priority.

Don't have to live there to get a ticket for a license plate violation, all you have to do is drive through...

    What's all the panic?
Looks like the only amendment to the VC 5201 for 2011 is the "italicized" line. In other words;you can't legally mount the plate sideways, backwards (back side facing out) or upside down.

Are you sure? I believe if your car legal in your home state, its legal in any other state.
    Otherwise would mean chaos.
Think about it. If your home state only requires a rear plate but california requires front and rear, there is No Way they can ticket you.

It is a big deal. California is a test bed for crazy *** laws and regulations. First they try it here. If it doesnt cause riots or revolutions, then its implimented to the other 49 states.

So just the BOLDFACE words are new rules? ...does not look like much to worry about if that is all. They have not been enforcing the front license plate requirement much for at least 20 years. I have not used front plates in years on almost all of my cars and have never been stopped.

You gotta know that the rest of the car world looks at what is happening with California legislation, because very possibly it will be happening in their home town soon. Yours just seems to lead the way, mostly because of the emissions I guess.
I remember when Matson invented the H.V.L.P. spray gun to save money on materials, and the E.P.A. saw how much less paint was being sprayed into the air, and made them mandatory by law. This started in California, and spread across the land. At first just major cities, then eventually, everywhere.
Personally, I love California, and always have a BLAST every time I run down there.

I didn't realize that having a front plate that is upright and readable is a "crazy *** law".

Personally, I'm sick of this "Oh my god the sky is falling in California!!!".... especially when it comes from people WHO DON'T EVEN LIVE HERE!! And if you do happen to live here and you don't like it, nothing is keeping you from leaving.

I haven't had a front plate in 45 years of driving here. Always removed then when I got the vehicle. AND my homebuilt lowrideing car trailer isnt even 12" above the ground in the back. I guess I'll take my chances since I've gotten away with it this long.

  21. Cities with them there stoplight cameras is the likely place you'll get a ticket for no front license plate.

Should be interesting considering how many trailers, including most of the car & equipment trailers at rental yards, have the plate mounted vertically on the left fender (as has been common practice for many years, as they don't fit well horizontally), and the thousands of custom motorcycles with the plates mounted vertically low & left, again, common practice for may years, the the extent that there are many custom plate frames & plate/light combos available

I'll just say the front plate is no more than 60 miles from the car.

I live here. I m sick of the people who think that silly little laws are no big deal. It ****s to have seen so many of my rights taken away by the whacked *** politicians in Sacramento writing these crazy *** laws. When they outlaw SBC-100's, or modified vehicles, then you might actually give a ****. By then it will be too late. Think that wont happen? Just look at what you used to be able to do here that you can no longer do because of silly *** laws- ie smoking in bars, riding in the back of a truck, building a deck without a permit, riding a motorcycle without a helmet etc. It all adds up to a total loss of your freedom if you dont pay attention.
This year California p***ed over 750 new laws. Thats 750 things you can no longer do. Now multiply that by, oh lets say 10 years. Thats, on average, 7500 things you can no longer do. Now try 20. Thats 15,000 laws written...15,000 less things you can do. There's only so much freedom you have left. Again, think about that.

Well, what if they ban Hot Rods? What if the State, for environmental reasons, bans cars older than 10 years? How about the outright ban of the internal combustion engine? I guess you would think its no big deal to turn your Rod into a Hybrid? Think im joking? There's some liberal whacked ***es in Sacramento who want to do just that. And guess what? They will eventually get their way. They always do thanks to those who think losing freedoms that 'dont effect them' are no big deal.

I guess I'd better be careful then. Mine is currently in my back window. No where else to put it if I don't have a bumper.

I've been stopped for no front plate on my OT pickup ... just received a warning (first time in 14 years of living in SoCal). Some of the local PD's run vehicle check roadblocks. According to a recent news report, if the cops see missing plates, burned out lights, cracked windshields, dark window tint, "obstructed view" (**** hanging from the mirror) and other BS infractions, they have cause to pull you over and demand to see current driver's license, registration and proof of insurance. They usually score quite a few "none of the above" violations, outstanding warrants and DUI's which results in a vehicle impound, fine and often jail. Of course, the primary reason is to improve the revenue stream for the city.
