Water Pump Rebuild?

I am hoping someone can refer me to a person or company that rebuilds water pumps at a reasonable price. I thought I read a post sometime back naming someone who does this, I could be mistaken. I would attempt this myself but I'm petty sure I lack the tools to do it.

I found a site online (rockauto.com) that offers the service but it appears they are a third party and they are not real clear on who does the work and what kind of warranty you get (workmanship or lost part recovery). I prefer to work directly with someone if I can.

Specs:

1955 Plymouth Polysphere 259
Current pump is leaking from the weep hole.

Above picture is the actual pump, I can post more pics of it off if needed.

Mine looks like the one in the bottom photo except mine does not have the grease(?) fitting.

There is a fellow in Kings Park NY (LI) named Arthur Gould who did some water pumps for me in the late 80's/early 90's and I was very happy with the results. These were not common items (1934 Caddy, 1937 Caddy) and the workmanship was excellent.

Try www.napaonline.com. I did a brief search using 55 Plymouth Savoy and they show a pump like yours. They had a rebuilt one for my 56 Desoto.

Stopped by there this AM ... they cant get one and their supplier is out of cores so they will not be available anytime soon. Rockauto.com also list them but when you click to purchase it tells you they are not available

I rebuilt the water pump on my 348 Chevy because a new one was pretty expensive. It is not hard to do if you have access to a press.

Yeah ,I did not think it would be ... but no no access to a press at this time I would hate to mess it up.

Try Googling Terrill Machine in Texas.........also advertises in Hemmings......do great work and install upgraded bearings and seals...........

Thanks ...after going to the Hemmings site I found several companies that do it ... I should be able to get a few quotes together now...

That third party probably does 50% of the rebuilt water pumps in the US. They are one of the major suppliers of rebuilt parts in the country. But you should be able to get better rebuild parts going though one of the specialty rebuilders.

This is good info - when you get it all figured out, Damon, tuck this info away here on the HAMB so the rest of us Polysphere nuts can use it if/when our water pumps give up the ghost. I know mine wasn't in new shape, but it wasn't bad when I bolted it back onto the block.

Looks the same as all the early Hemi's had. I bet a kit for Chrysler pumps will fit.

Thanks for the post. I looked into this because I just didn't want to use parts store junk. I found a rebuild kit on ebay I think for my SBC pump for $50. Seems pricey but I dunno where else to find one. I checked out hemmings, good idea.

After receiving a reply on some questions I had sent off to RockAuto I feel a lot better about using their service. Cardone handles the rebuild for this pump.

Looks like it will be about 27 dollars plus shipping cost. Depending on what I hear back from another that I contacted, it looks like I will go with RockAuto after all.

Here is their reply to me:

Once you place an order for a part that is only available as a return and rebuild service we will contact you in order to get you the paperwork that needs to be included when you send you part in. At that time the core charge will be removed. If there is a handling fee for that particular rebuild that will be applied at that time but most times there is no handling fee unless the remanufacturer finds there is nothing wrong with the item sent in, essentially it is just a testing fee.

The manufacturers, or in this case remanufacturer, are listed in the catalog in front of the part numbers. You can also see the warranty information from our warranty page online. Based on the part price you referenced and the vehicle information provided it looks like you are looking at the A1 Cardone rebuild, these rebuilds are usually done in PA but the return instructions would give the exact details since some manufacturers do have multiple locations. A1 Cardone also has a 1 year 18000 mile warranty. There is no insurance on the shipments but if there is any trouble or damage with a shipment you can simply contact us to get it resolved.

there is a guy in phoenix arizona area that specializes rebuilding obsolete waterpumps. he did a dodge 270 hemi one a while back, even made a impeller for it. his phone # 623-205-4482 his email is waterpumprebuilder@gmail.com
