what would be a good transmission to put behind a somewhat upgraded flathead 226 ford 6 cylinder engine in a 48 ford pickup? I'm putting out about 120-130 horsepower rough estimate. I would like to get some halfway decent mileage and still be able to do a little pulling at the same time.

    Thanks

I am thinking a manual transmission since that is what was in there, but it was a really heavy duty one and top end was about 50 mph. It is geared fairly low also.

What rear end ratio do you have???

I would be looking for a 3 spd + OD if you have a fairly low rear ratio (3.7+). OD for cruising, and the rear gear for pulling.

If you have a high rear end ratio (3.5 or less) , I would use a 4 spd manual with a 1:1 4th. Top Loader or similar.

Finding the correct bellhousing or adaptor will be the fun part (i.e. expensive).

    Good Luck.

I have a 4.8 rear end ratio, it's in a F-3, it can squat down and pull out a stump if you want it to.

looks like 49-51 6 cyl 3 speed bellhousing is what you need.T-10 4 speed bolts up and the T-5 o.d.will also. You need a T-5 without the integrel[sic] bellhousing and from a ford, mustang etcThe GM t-5 wont have the correct bolt pattern but can be used with a different combination of 48 and earlier bellhousing and aftermarket flathead to chevy adapter

with that rear end you should just put in quick-change center section-you already have most of the parts.main thing you need is another left-side axle housing[the side that doesnt have the ring and pinion]:D

Definitely going to want an OD with that rear end. A 0.67 OD will make that 4.8 feel like a 3.22 rear end. Probably just right for a warmed up Flathead six.

    Have Fun.

Go with the T-10,you said you wanted to do some pulling too_One of the toughest trannies made and with the six banger you don"t need no OD.

There are a few variables that can affect the final choice of transmission. Manual or auto?

Besides the rear ratio, the tire size, type of driving, rpm at cruise and distance driven. Type of pulling? Trailer or compe***ion pulling? Weight of trailer?

  13. ive got that gearing in my van.. an OD is what you want and with the right machining you may be able to use your bell-housing
