So my brother, father and I have wanted to go to the salt for a long time. We bought a belly tank but it's just too far down the line to take out there this year. What we thought about doing was taking my 54 210 out there pulling a small trailer and a 3 wheeled electric car that we built when I was in high school to race in the electro rally. The fastest we had the car goin on an oval was 76mph and we've always wanted to see what it would do on the salt. It's a little 1hp eleftric motor and 2 car batteries.

My question is would most of you wait it out for the real speed tank. Or go out with the other. Would we get laughed at for hauling that thing out there?

If you have never been before, then just go!!!

Get a current rule book if you are serious about running it.

You may get some laughs, but you will laugh at some of the concoctions you see there.

Just remember some of the strange cars have been evolving for 60 years.....

  14. I guess it depends on how much fun you want to have and how soon you want to have it.

People run lawn mowers, small displacement bikes etc on the salt. no one spends too much time laughing at them as they are too busy with their own chit. Well I suppose the posers might give you a guffaw or two but they aren't anyone.

I say GO FOR IT! Last year was my first time, and I regret not going sooner! There's all kinds of crazy stuff out there running. You'll fit right in. Make sure you ask questions and study that rule book BEFORE you go out there and run into road blocks...

If it's bizarre, it'll fit right in. How about a Blown Injected Pontiac slant 4 in a flat hood Jeep?

These are the rules and records for Electric vehicles. You might have an issue with the three wheels though. Also, something to ask about is the rule where if your cl*** has no record they tend to tech to the next highest speed. Beef Stew can answer that one.

"All vehicle technical inspections will be based on existing cl*** record or the next higher cl*** where a record exists."

    5.A.3 Electric Vehicle - /E
This cl*** is for vehicles using electric power as the sole means of propulsion. The vehicle shall be wheel driven. THE BODY CONFIGURATION IS UNLIMITED. The vehicle and driver shall meet all technical and safety regulations based on the speed of the existing record. The cl*** will be based on vehicle weight less driver. The entrant shall provide a current weight certificate for cl***ification purposes.
Cl*** I Under 1099 lb. Less than 500 kg
    Cl*** II 1100-2200 lb. 500-1000kg
Cl*** III 2201 lb. and over Over 1000 kg

    Electric Vehicle - /E
    1 Open – no record
    2 Lightning Rod R. Rannberg 08/97 213.084
    3 Buckeye Bullet R. Schroer 10/04 314.958

    El Mirage Cl*** 1 record:
I Powerton/Quickcable, Spirit of San Antonio III
    L. Healey 10/94 119.164

Dan, I've been wondering about the tech deal for an open cl***.

**O/BVGCC and **O/BVGALT are open. What cl*** would we have to get the car teched to?

    Sorry for the thread sidetrack!

I think it would have to be in some different type of cl***. It's small. It has bicycle wheels and such. I'll have to check more into cl***es. It probably weighs 90lbs less driver.

I say go watch a couple of times just to gat a feel for it. Ask some questions and run your electric car, you'd be way ahead of most guys. And when you get you belly tank done you'd know what you're doing 'cause you got some experience with your electric.

What engine and cl*** is the belly tank going to run?

BTW, Years ago, I used to circle track race a real compe***ive guy from Dodge city. Think his name was Buddy Mullins, and I think his dad's name was Pinkie. Good folks.

Don't worry about what car you go out there in just go!!! It's easy to let life get in the way so if you have the chance jump on it. Then next time you can go out with something cool. I rented a 2009 Corrola and it was awesome none the less. I was just so excited to be there and hear the action in person that nothing else mattered.

  28. Bicycle wheels?

    Hmmmmm...

Don't know if those wheels will p*** tech... unless you get it approved by the technical committee.

My suggestion is to go there to spectate... look at the cars, talk to racers... and get a feel for what it takes to build a car.

For sure, you don't need to have a race car to be there. You'll have a blast, regardless.
