Was out last week picking up a 52 chevy parts car and the owner had a truck that I new about some 25 years ago. I new that the truck had a Hemi in it so ask where the hemi was and he still had it and after looking at it we struck a deal.I give him his asking price. $100! I got it back to the shop today and check to see it the engine would turn over. turned over no problem. Took some of the parts off it and removed one top pan and pulled the number from the block, heads and intake. The engine inside looks very clean. Came home tonite to check the numbers and find I have a 331(#VT448-1826C)blocks with 354(# 1730438-1) head on it. can`t find any info on the intake(#1537728-1). What does the last part of the block number mean? 1826C?? Plans are to put this away for a future project. Been hunting for a Hemi for years and I final found one. Anything info you can p*** on to me about this motor would be great.thanks
Can't go wrong for $100, that is for sure. If those valve covers clean up decently, those are worth 2-3 times that by themselves. Can't quite tell, but if you have the 4-bolt truck exhaust manifolds, you totally scored. Didn't get the golden adj. rockers at that price, but some of us would want to kill you if you did anyway. So, probably just as well.
The valve covers will clean up easily. A huge score for the cash.... Great to know that the 331 will find a place into a future project!!!
By the way, in case you haven't checked it out yet, we've been building up a Hemi Tech archive of information. There's a bunch of us Hemi nuts here that have contributed to an amazing chunk of information. If you click on the HEMI TECH picture in my signature line it will take you to the Index ***ociated with that archive. There's more information there than you would ever want to know, yet still much more that could be added. So check it out and add when you can. Congrats, again, on your score!
How do you thing I found out what engine and heads I had.lol.I have been going through that hemi tech page for a few days now. great info.
I have to watch myself here I looking for intakes and stuff now.lol Have to control myself. But it is hard.lol
Congrats on your hemi. A friend gave me a '56 DeSoto 330CID hemi and trans, not stuck will turn over, want to start it this spring on a stand.
Really??? A $100??? I officially hate you now! LOL, nice score, I can only imagine how addicting that engine is going to be! Have fun!
Dropped up to fitzee's shop today for lunch. (OK...had to see it up close! ) Man oh man...what an impressive lump of steel those engines are. There is no doubting their place at the top of the food chain...just on looks alone. It does have the 4 bolt flanges on the exhaust manifolds too.
Hell I gave one away last summer I have had for many years. I personally could not justify the cost to rebuild it let alone really build it . I love them, but like women they can be expensive.
Funny thing this guy had 3 more last spring and sent them to the dump!! There is a few industrial Hemi`s around. I Knew of three. Was trying to get my hand on two but were sold before I got there.Still know of one more but the owner won`t sell. They were use around here for running pump houses
O.K. Fitz --now get it out of your head. 1 thing at a time. you got to have the Flatliner on the go this summer. Take it from an old fool. no lol
Been doing some research and I come to find out that the VT448 number can be a 56 331 or a 59 354!! The head number tells me the heads are 354 from 56-59!! Any way to tell the years?? By looking at the rear bellhousing mounts to the frame cross member you have a 1959 Dodge truck engine. Although, I am thrown by the ID number. The '57 & '58 mounts were approximately cast at a 45 degree angle. Steve ID: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=121000&highlight=hemi+tech&page=2
