I did a search. I am rebuilding the front suspension on my 53 Chevy 210. The upper a arm and the back side of the pivot shaft are bent really bad. I got the A arm off and found a new one. The shaft will not budge. My 1954 Motors auto manual shows how to take it out with a special tool. I do not have that tool. The shaft is removed from back to front and installed from front to back. I can not get it out because it is bent. Any Ideas? I'd rather not heat it for fear of messing up the spring tower. Am I just being to cautious? I am also afraid that the spring pocket might be bent as well. HELP!
You can see the angle is different from left to right in the first pic. The second shows the right side up close. It is bent bad.
I knew about the different years. I have all the parts to rebuild it. I just can't get the dang shaft out. Also, are the upper A arms the same from side to side? The look and measure them same. But I know that doesn't always mean that they are.
I'd be interested to see how this turns out. My 54 had one that was chewed up and I used Vise Grips and a torch to remove it...the problem then was trying to get the new one on. I ended up giving up and finding a complete suspension from a yard. I even called Kanter since I bought their kit and they had no idea how to find the tool...
If your not going to reuse it, take it out with a pipe wrench. Here is a link to COMPLETE photo tutorial on rebuilding the front end. Todd http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/218134/
welded a lugnut to mine. be careful though, they only come out one way. they're tapered, so you gotta weld it to the front.
Thats a good idea. I found a parts car that has never been wrecked. (Mine has apparently) I might just swap the entire front suspension and rebuild it off the car. Seems easier that way. I'm afraid that the sprind tower is bent. This link is amazing by the way... http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/sh...hp?tid/218134/
yeah, that link kicks ****. I tried using my old bushings to drive the shafts on but they just kept splitting. Tried two new ones hoping they were tougher... not really. Wish I would have thought of using that lower unit since it is "beefier". Still have a lot of the front end kit from Kanter that's never been installed.
Made a little progress today. That front end is a ***** to get out with the inner fenders still on the car! I did get it out and was able to take a quick look before I ran out of time and daylight. Here is the damage. You can see how badly the a arm pivot shaft is bent. It's a wonder it even went down the road. Tomorrow I'll get it out and see if the if the spring tower is damaged.
I was wondering what all you had to replace to resolve this issue, I have the eaxact same problem on the p***enger side. I just recently got the car and have not torn it apart yet. any info. would be awesome. Clayton
