A few years ago me and my son were on a 10 day canoe trip through minnesota and canada with the Boy Scouts,Boundry Waters trip several lakes all portages canoes only and a-lot of carrying the canoe from lake to lake,Any way I came across this, thought is was cool !!
Tie barrels to it, and pull it to shore with a Hippopautomous. Don't ask, just read the link. POST # 73 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=442552&highlight=hippo&page=4
x2 on trying to save it.. its an old pickup bed.. half the people in my town have one in their back yard. but if ya wanna save it for an adventure and to have a nice flower pot with a good story.. go for it
If it were anywhere else, I'd say go for it... but you shouldn't ever take anything from the BWCA. That box may be just junk left behind from the old logging days, but it is considered a historical artifact and should be left as it is... there are also strict laws about removing or moving any man-made artifacts found in the area.
the Eagle Scout in me trumps the hot rodder here. It's like the T's ****tered about Philmont. Better left in place for someone else to enjoy. And how long has that sawzall cord got to be
Where the hell is Philmont? .....T's........I wanna go ge....look at one of 'em.....yea , that's the ticket.....go look at one of 'em......
There was no chance of removing it !! besides not knowing what property I was on, state, national forest ?? I was in the middle of a long camping----canoing trip-----and in Minnesota---I live in Colorado ??? Just thought it was cool find !!!! not many of these to be found just lying around where I live ???
Get one of the locals to sneek back in there with a sled in the winter time. They do it all the time.Oops did i just say that?
Funny but another true story. I was canoeing the headwaters of the Green River outside of Pinedale Wyoming in 1975 and found a 26-7 T coupe (body only) on the river bank about 5 ft above the highwater level. Since it was on Natl Forest land I spoke to the local ranger and he said make it go away, it's junk that doesn't fit the wilderness look. That was a time before cordless drills so a cold chisel for the rivets and a hack saw for the subframe I carried the pieces about 1/3 mile to my PU. Ended up as a rust free body. To get the body sides from the subframe seperated I just unfolded the wrap/fold holding them to the subframe. Hard to believe but ther was no rust on the 1/4 panels. Movin/on
It got there in the winter and would come out the same way. There are lots of those in the BWCA that used to be used for easy portages. A snowmobile and some metal skis would take care of it.
BTW--Philmont is in NM, but the T's I recall were several days into the hike--and really made the campsite stick out in my mind
Just for grins, google map the area and see if there are roads close into where the truck bed is sitting. It no doubt got there on a road or trail. Since it has and axle and at least one wheel/tire under it has it been made into a trailer. I've got an inflatable raft that along with a couple of sections of plywood across it would float that thing right out of there but you still would have to portage it every time. Best left for others to dream over in the future.
