The current project, though not a Hot Rod, requires a tall floor shift just like a Gennie shifter.
Price, shipping AND the "fun factor" requires me to build one myself. I'll be attaching it directly to the T350 trans with a floor boot into the cab.

Just making a "click" shifter would be easy but I'd like to have it gated or even top ****on (second choice) operated for safety.

SOMEONE here mentioned having made a couple...wonder would you be willing to p*** on the info on just how you went about it?

I thought about using a simple cable pull, like a 2 spd axle control to operate a gate just for the main locations, like staying in park or NOT hitting reverse while driving, but I'd really like to have some feel between 1st, second and drive as well. A pull knob would be a little hard to control in that situation.

Any info or just ideas on something like this would be appreciated and I'm sure interesting to a few others as well!

    Thanks...

  2. I made a shifter for my last car using an old mr gasket universal shifter... I just hacked off the stick and welded on a 39 stick... unfortunately the shifter has no gating so you have to be carefull. I actually built in my own lock to hold it in drive while cruising. It was a bit crude but worked great.. You can use a mr gasket shifter, hurst daytona, or hurst indy for this build.

If you can scare up the money I'd just go with a gennie. If you are on a budget and don't mind fabbing you can do something similar.

Sorry I don't have any pics. I will be making a similar contraption for my current project and will post some pictures when finished.

    Thanks and good luck!

I used one out of a ford aerostar minivan. It originally had cable but, I converted it to linkage. It has the saftey stops. No neutral saftey tho. Shifts great on my th400.

I got mine out of a toyota mini van, cable included for 25.00, having some cable issues though or could just be out of adjustment, I'm sure though for the 25.00 I'll get it sorted out eventually or else just go to a mechanical linkage Like Jason455 did
its got the little ****on you push with your thumb and locks it in position

PS Jason you got any pictures of how you did your conversion?:D

the ford aeorstars have the tall shifter handle as well if thats what you need

    Geezzz...now there ya go!
Didn't even think of those Aerostars!
I was planning on trans attachment but that isn't carved in stone...and it would save some valuable time on fabrication.

Think I'll make some calls and see whats available in the minivan market...but I still wouldn't mind seeing some homebuilt stuff just for reference!

Thanks for the great idea guys!

Bill the one in my rod is a old B&M that I made longer. The think you should watch for is the swing of the gate from park to 1st.The shorter the better.I had to bend mine to get it to clear the dash in park.Problem is when the shifter gets longer it swing gets bigger.them old pinto shifter are cool if you can find one.small swing on them.

This is for the Landcruiser Fitzee...I'd have to climb down from the seat to operate a Pinto shifter! LoL

i found an old automatic shifter at the swap for 5 bux. Did a little hacking and slashing. Used .50 diameter bar stock for the shifter handle, a coconut head from Hawaii for the knob then wrapped it in snake skin. I works good and freaks people out too......

Hay I seen that same shifter mounted on the dash in some rigs!!.I know it is short.but if you cut the handle off and make it longer it would work for that plow truck..

I don`t know why your wasting your time on that plow truck.Drill a hole in the floor and ram a coat hanger in it and there ya go a shifter.LOL
