140 for a set? sounds pretty cheap to me. thats 4 bearings, so 35 a bearing? for a 56 year old truck. Just make sure they are timkens or fafnirs for those prices.

140 for the whole set? so both inner and outer bearings for both sides? 140 isnt a bad price if its all 4 bearings. do you need them all or just one?

napa should be able to get the #s of the original ball bearing, look up the specs of it (OD, ID, width, and load range) and match a tapered roller to that number. They have the books to do this, but finding a desk jockey at any modern parts shop willing to cross-reference #s is hard. Heaven forbid they open a book instead of looking at a screen!! If your Napa wont do it, go somewhere else. find a "local" shop, they always are great with that kind of stuff, then go there for all your parts, no exceptions.

What is funny about "New Departure"? They were one of G.M.'s divisions and their source for ball bearings for many years. Hyatt was their roller bearing division.

Most bearing houses that I've dealt with do not/can not supply the caged New Departure style ball bearing (It was also used in bicycle hubs and Saginaw steering gears). Best bet is some obselete parts supplier.

Just as a shot in the dark, try Authentic Automotive at either 972-552-2221 or rpo324@sbcglobal.net. I've bought New Departure style bearings from him for steering gears.

Dont go through an automotive chain store, Go to a bearing store. They can get any bearing on the planet at a fraction of the cost.

Motion Industries is who I use.

Yeah, ball bearings **** That's why a 55 year old truck still has the original 55 year old New Departure bearings in it....

what number on the outer bearing? The last two digits should tell you the part number, usually either B01 or B67

Bearing stores don't sell specialty automotive wheel ball bearings that I know of. It's an auto part.

rockauto.com has them but you need to know what the number is first

Amen! And that's what I was trying to say: Bearing stores don't do automotive ball bearings. They can probably do the roller conversion parts but why would you?

I never could come up with the bearings to convert my 54 Chevy ball bearings over to rollers. I heard there used to be a conversion.

Uh, the original ball bearings were in the truck since 1955? Are you hoping to get greater longevity out of the tapered roller bearings? If you pack those ball bearings right and maintain them, they'll outlast you, believe me!

Beside, ball bearings are more "traditional" :D:D:D

I got a tech thread about this I did a couple of years ago. No machining of hub or spindle. Simple spacers and off the shelf bearings. And orig wheel seal. I actually done the conversion about 10 years ago, maybe 8?. And no issues since. No repack yet but a couple of minor adjustments on the spindle nut. Mostly highway miles on this car, about 15,000 on these so far.

If you have access to a manual lathe you can do this and sell your old ball bearings to a Corvette restorer :D for a lot more than the new parts cost.

There is a direct outer bearing (timken) that fits the spindle pefectly, but inners require a sleeve and a different seal.

Somewhere I have the info, PM me so I don't foget to look for it.

PS...140 for the ball bearing set is probably about the best you'll find for them.

Try a bearing store, they have automotive bearings. A bearing dosen't know what it is in. Look in the yellow pages of the nearest large town or city. If you have a business name to use or tax number that you can use, like a farm number or contractor number you will get them less than half of napa price.

You can reuse them from another truck .Just make sure you keep the inner and outer race with the bearings they were on.I have done it many times with the expensive ball type bearings.Lots of people clip these trucks and just throw the spindals / hubs away with the rest of the axle .Im not saying to use junk ,but nothing wrong with them being used .You can clean them up and 8 times out of 10 they will be fine.Btw ,if you do reuse them be real carefull not to nick the races when you knock them out of the hub ...
