  1. In So Cal it was their brother Felix Chevrolet. A pretty cool cat from what I've heard.

    Nice to read that again.

Very different men than Henry was.

Wonder if any Frontenacs still exist.

  6. Well, my '28 is OHV and that basic 4 cyl engine design is the same as the "490" which goes back to 1914.

The first Chevrolet in 1912 was a T Head design.

  7. Sorry, I didn't see the "V8" on your post- that would be the 1917 version:

Henry Leland named his company after Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the founder of Detroit. Cadillac was an 18th century French explorer.

  16. To much time on my hands tonight. Last one for the night

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Straight-4_engine

Below is taken from the above website.

<LI class="g knavi">The Chevrolet Inline-4 engine one of Chevrolet's first automobile engines was designed by Arthur Mason and introduced in 1913. Exposed pushrods actuated valves in the detachable crossflow cylinder head. Chevrolet referred to its overhead-valve engine as a "valve-in-head" design. This drew considerable publicity in a time when most rivals were flatheads. It was produced in a single size through 1928 when it was replaced by the Chevrolet Straight-6 engine.

    1914–1916 Chevrolet Series H (24 HP)
    1916–1922 Chevrolet 490 (20 HP)
    1917–1924 Series F
1922 Chevrolet Series X Utility Coupe
    1925 Chevrolet Series K (26 HP)
    1926 Chevrolet Series V
    1927 Chevrolet Series AA
    1928 Chevrolet Series AB

  17. That's just one of their heads- they had another DOHC, an SOHC, and OHV versions as well. They even made an aftermarket head for the Chevrolet 490 engine... which kinda stunk from what I've read.

That story has been often repeated but I've not seen any proof of it or any sample of said wallpaper. Someone posted this article here awhile back; which seems a little more believable: http://home.earthlink.net/~scrippsbooth/chevbowtiehistory.html

The article claims that William C. Durant got the idea from a newspaper ad:

well have fun sorting fact from fiction in this post. LOL some of you should pick up a book once in a while... at least make use of Google, or better yet Wikipedia. there are some wonderful books out there on all of these great men. the Henry Ford, Henry Leland, Cadillac, Lincoln, etc, etc. thing is very interesting reading. read just about anything on the beginnings of Henry Fords's carreer with the automobile and you will be enlightened.

Since the original question was about whether Chevrolet was named after a real person, I thought I'd post this photo of the Chevrolet brothers final resting place. They are all buried together in Holy Cross / St. Joseph Cemetery, in Indianapolis. Louis' stone is on the left and Gaston's is on the right. For some reason, Arthur does not have a stone of his own, his grave is unmarked.
The "Chevrolet Bowtie" on Gaston's grave was apparently left by a fan and is not attached to the stone. There is no mention of the Chevrolet's racing and automotive careers on the stones.
The stone on the left says: "Louis Chevrolet Dec. 25, 1878 June 6, 1941" The other says: "Gaston Chevrolet Oct. 4 1892 Nov. 20, 1920".

  28. How about Ransom E Olds? Also the namesake for REO...

  29. I'm steamed that I didn't get that one! ;)

With all those foreign vehicles in there, I'm surprised you didn't include Enzo Ferrari. :)
