Hey my crazy brother's idea about a rail job is pretty good. Is there anyone in Chicago that would like to get together once a week, drink some beer, I stress some beer, not lots of beer, and put one of these things together? I have some axel tubes (actually a whole rear end with bad gears and old brakes, but who needs to stop) and some 36 radius rods to throw in the mix...I also have a couple 36 rims, need two more fronts and some tires. We could start by puting together a list of what we all have and what we need, and where in the city we can find a shop to work on it. I've got no room though. We've got some time. List we need: motor, frame and body, front spindles and rims, front axel Model A would be good, I have some extra front spring and an A rear spring....we could use the rear cross member. We also need a seat, battery, helmet, and jacket possibly full suit. Continental John, I know your out there, you got your ears on? Django, Zeanor, Hellfish, Abomber? anyone
I'd love to help but 300 mile north makes it tough. I'll throw in a Model A axle I got for the build! Maybe some other stuff too. Now as far as payment goes a spin at the HAMB drags would work!
so in other words, you need a dragster? .. sounds like a good time though, you all drive a couple hundred miles east and i'm in.
What do you need a body for? Or a rear spring? Or front spring? Think Basic... think "together in a couple of weekends... think CHEAP! Sam.
Not sure, but I thought we could do something on Friday nights somewheres around here. Just trying to rally the troops right now
I think at least some front spring is a good thing, not necessarily a rear spring, but I don't want my arm getting taken off.
I have a stock 354 hemi motor I was saving for a project, but would consider offering it up. It's currently disassembled, but the block, crank and rods have been tanked and magnafluxed and are in good shape. I'm taking the heads in to get checked out this weekend.
392, I'm wondering if that would fit within the guidelines, but would be a sweet engine for the Chi-Town Rail Job.
Go check out the rules before you begin... OHV v8 motors are not allowed. The CHEAPEST way to go would be to get a motor and trans that you know already run... Sam.
Yeah, sorry. Found the rules in another post after I put that up. I have a '50 flathead motor we can use, but I need it back for my truck. Or if someone in the Chicago area wants to build a real FED, we can use the hemi.
I think I have a couple wheels we could use. I'll have to dig around the barn back home. How would we get it down there? Our club has been talking about putting together some kind of drag car, but I don't think it's going to happen for this year. I have the flathead that came out of my coupe, but I have no idea what condition it is in. It's been sitting for a long long time.
interesting idea, but your toughest challenge will be finding a place to work on it anywhere near Chiacgo for a reasonable fee. Space is limited and everyone is using what they have. Second, say we all contribute parts and build this car... who owns it? registers it? keeps it? I don't mean to be a cranky old man, but if you don't work these things out before you begin you're going to have big problems when you're done
Yea, we need a sponser, kinda like when you have a softball team and they put Bill's Bail Bonds on the back of em. That way its a write off for em....whatever a write off is Joe, that would be the big issue. Space does kind of suck in the city, maybe someone close out in the burbs could offer us a small spot for our troubles. As far as what gets put into it, I don't know that it's going to be that expensive where anyone will be too pissed if they put in some parts, a few hours, and get soem joy out of it. I guess if decided, if one guy wants out, either another guy comes in or the other 3 buy him out etc. Like sam said four guys $500 each for a budget. I'm guessing tires are a big part of that. Chad, I bet we could get that ole flathead running...I just got a Navarro 2x2 race intake that I would loan to the cause, but I need it for my car eventually. Also, say you put something in, you have every right to get that part out...That way no one is pissed.
Our team is pretty simple. I provide the roller. Recycler brings the power. There may be some crossover but all that can be un-bolted after we win. Ha Ha.
Yea, i was thinking the Engine, tranny, and rear end could be removed and given back, along with wheels and tires if someone wants to buy the tires, then the wheel owner could sell the wheels. But it would all have to be discussed before we got too far into it. $$ would go into the frame, safety equip, fuel etc. Maybe we could start with a budget of $1000 for 5 guys, then add to that. We should also document everything with pictures, and write down who gave what, etc. It can be figured out.
Cool idea. Would love to be a part of it, but will be short on both time and $$$ over the next few months. But... if an extra hand is needed/appreciated on a "whenever you're able to show up and help" basis -- PM me anytime. I think Joe nailed a big issue though. Space is a real problem for any of us that live in the city. JR (Jefferson Park - Northwest Side of Chicago)
I can throw some parts in if you get this going. Have a couple of '40 front axles and some spindles, and a lot of other stuff. Are you interested in selling that Navarro intake? I had one but sold it to Bill O'Rourke last summer because I gave up finding some Navarro heads. Now I have the heads and no intake.
