I painted mine tonight after gl*** beading and Im having second thoughts ,,,,Im gonna clear the manifold and carbs are close to same color .I think it will look to modern for my build ,I figure Ill ask this question before I run back over pops to use his gl*** bead again .........I know Ill mess his mix up .But Im going in on a new supply with him this weekend ........
I like natural, or the stock gold zinc wash thingy. I am working on mine now, getting the paint off the manifold and carbs.
You dont say what Carbs your are working on so I will ***ume 97s or Ford 2 bbl, But this pretty much covers ALL Carbs . I would NEVER Bead Blast a Carb body as it takes away the Smooth Original Finish and/or the Gold Color of the carb. I would only Dip the Body in Carb cleaner to remove Dirt, Oil, Build up, ETC. This somtimes takes off the Gold but if all the carbs Look the same I really don't care if they are Gold or Silver. I would also NEVER Clear Coat a Freshly Blasted Aluminum manifold or Paint the Carb Bodys. Sounds like you went to far already so do as you like or whatever looks Best to you.
before after I want my carbs to look like carbs and not plastic toys. Just my preference but I think bright red carbs look stupid. Painted carbs are for show cars that may or may not run. I come from the performance side and not the angel hair show crowd of our hobby. They Eastwood carb paint looks phony to my eye. JMHO These were bead blasted and then dipped into a 10% solution of alodine and water for 20 seconds. Yes I timed it. They came out just fine for my tastes. I powder coated the original throttle lever. Factory rebuilt carbs were not perfect out of the box either. This is what 3 deuces looked like back then IMHO
Zinc alloy parts were chromated from the factory to resist oxidation. The goldish, greenish color is the residue from the chromate (chemical etching process). Any decent chemical cleaner will destroy the chromate coating, thus shortening the life of the piece. Good paint will protect the outside of a carburetor, but the inside is more critical anyway, especially if the owner lives in an area where ethanol based fuel is the norm. Having the castings rechromated offers the best protection. As to paint, or natural; that would be an aesthetics question, and is pretty much each individuals opinion. Jon.
Thanks guys Just gonna blast and Vonn I did check your pics out in your profile ,Just got back from the autoparts store picked up gloss black for the bases ......Just gonna bead blast them all .I also know that if you want them all to match ,Must be replated in cadium .
I wash the cores in mineral sprits, dis***emble then bead blast the body and throttle housing. All steel parts get tumbled. Then I dip the body in 2% concrete leaner (acid) and then I "dye" my carbs using yellow chromate. Comes out very close to the original color. I sandblast the manifold and then pressure wash it, then I just leave it alone.
I like the original gold tone, but I don't mind the bare look after dipping them either. The Alodine looks great, and sounds easy, so I'd sure do that in the future for mine! No paint for mine!
Hi, I beadblast the carb boies after washing in mineral spirits. I then dip the bodies in 2% concrete cleaner to expose the zinc. Then I dip in a 3% solution of yellow chromate. The carb bases I blast then paint with flat black high temp then clear coat with wheel clear. The manifolds I sandblast to bring out the natural color, no clear coat.
