They both have the same 1:1 final drive. You would either need an overdrive i.e. T-5 or swap rear gears to change that.

Landseaandair told you right. Every three or four speed that I know of is 1to1 in top gear.
I ran a full syncro Saginaw three speed in my 48 for years and they are great transmissions that don't cost a whole lot comparatively.

    Some 70-80's Ford and Chrysler 4-speeds are overdrive 4th gear. GM's 1:1.

I have two 3-speed w/ OD transmissions taken from 1981-1987 Chevrolet pick-ups. They are A833 MOPAR (NPG) transmissions, which Chevy used during that stretch of time. There are two different versions: One has the Chevy bell housing bolt pattern and the other has MOPAR bolt pattern. If you find one with the MOPAR pattern, make sure you get the bell with it - they are VERY rare.

They are great, strong transmissions and OD is .73:1, as I recall. That would reduce your 4.11 rear to an effective (and efficient) 3.08:1 in OD. They make driving an old truck MUCH more enjoyable!

If the truck has the original rear, it's most likely a 3.90 ratio. Pretty steep if you want to get over 65 mph.

First figure out what you want the truck to be like when you're done with it. Then decide if a transmission or rearend swap would be more helpful for meeting your long term plans. Or maybe both will. But consider the engine, suspension, wheels, etc before you make your decision.

Now i want it to be traditional. But i dont think i can do that without a 700r4.I want to be able to go to the salt from my house.Wich is probably 100 or so miles i think from here.ther is no way i would attemt it with this trans and gear set up.speed limit is 75 for 90% of the way.MY little 327 wont handle that.

My be a real ****py 327 if it won't cruse at 3500-4000 for hours on end. Back in the 60s a lot of us ran 4.56/4.88 gears and thought nothing of running 70-75 to Cali from Az with a wound up small block.

Drive 65. My son has a 59 chevy pickup with the granny 4 speed and stock 3.90 gears, he drives between here and Tucson (80 miles) every now and then, no problem. With the 235 engine. They hate rpm a lot more than a 327.

I dont know how many miles this motor has on it.I just got the vales, seats and guides done on it.As well i replaced the timing chain. The guy i bought it from never heard it run,he drug it out of of a feild when he bought it from an estate sale.its a 65 327 and it still had the stock timing gears in it.They were aluminum with the plastic teeth the chain was streched out.i have only driven it around the block a few times now.But it seems to run ok.i just dont trust anything on the truck yet.
