I have two questions... 1st I'm looking for a place to buy the metal flake style materials? I'm shooting for something similar to the photo...

2nd, is there a a prefered material or proper term for the wire/spring-like thing that holds the head liner up? I have a '29 Modle A Sedan with a filled roof. So nothing up there is stock. How would yo go about laying this out? I have a pro interior guy doing the work, but to save money and time, I am helping with the research... I joined the interior social group, and read a lot of how-to's, just did not see this one...

    Thanks guys!

I think that material is about $16 a yard wholesale. It shouldn't be more than $35 retail.

    2. I think what your talking about is the headliner bow. but they usually fit inside a sleeve that is sewn on the roof side of the headliner. the headliner in the picture looks kinda goofy to me.

I got some 4" heavy foam, flake look vinyl at Joanne fabric, and some waterproof black out of their s**** bin. Did my doors and seats for $200. They have white, red, grey and black in stock, others are special order.

This was a while back though.

I have used this method quite a few times , I also used it on a 41 willys coupe the customer wanted a leather headliner. What you do is make the bows out of 1/2 inch MDF board. Get some heavy bristol board to make patterns, place the board on the roof and scribe in the contour of the roof from side to side, transfer that onto the MDF and cut it out. Now you have a piece that should fit snugly against the inside of your roof panel. Leave it about 6 inches long , now repeat this for the amount of bows you want to use. Once this is done you have to contour the under side of the bows to form the shape of your headliner. To bond the bows to the inside of your roof I use Primer-less high viscosity windshield urethane ( Es*** part # U418 ) glue up the bows use some masking tape to help hold them in place and let them dry over night. This stuff will not let go I have had headliners up for 10 years with no problems at all.
Now that you have the bows up you can begin to install the headliner , the nice part about this method is that you do not have to sew anything but the finished product gives the illusion of a sewn headliner.
Starting from the front cut a piece of material long enough to go beyond the first bow, glue the front above the windshield or where ever it starts and stretch the material back to the first bow and staple it on the back of the bow, make sure you stretch out all of the wrinkles. Now this is where it gets hard to explaine. Cut you second piece of material, now take that piece of material and place it on the first bow upside down, staple the material to the first bow all the way across, when this is done you should be able to stretch that piece back to the second bow, don't attach it yet, you have probably noticed you have a nasty leading edge ( bumpy staples sticking through the material ) to make a clean edge you will need to staple a piece of thick cardboard over the staples and then stretch it back and it will look nice and smooth. Now just continue the same process until you are done....Hope this helps, I will be using this method in my 29 Chev so I can take some pics and it will be easier to understand.

ROd Interiors has a "universal" bow kit. Is it far to ***ume that an accomplished interior guy knows what to do with this kit, or do I need to learn?

As far as #2 goes, show me what loks cool... I just picked that one becase there aren't that many headliner shots on model A's out there... I

Sorry to hijack the thread, but if anyone also knows a Canadian supplier for flake/glitter vinyl, please post it! Every one I've seen so far has been an American distributor, and I'd rather not pay international shipping + customs charges...

google search for "boat upholstery glitter" turned up quite a few places

http://www.garysupholstery.com/naugahyde/ngzodiac.html Zodiac Vinyl is the manufacturer $33/yd

    http://www.omnova.com/products/marineOEMUpholstery/nautolex_freespirit.aspx Nautolex is the manufacturer

can probably search more by these manufacturers and find a supplier in your area or order from these 2 places.

I have seen it at Joanne Fabric, not sure if it will hold up as well as the boat stuff. I was in there getting material to recover my dining room chairs instead of paying some jack*** $400that my wife had quote it. I did it for under $100 including 2 cans of scotchbrite. could have done leather for $150 but she didnt want that.

You guys are awesome with the bows and whatnot!

I detest that shiny uncomfortable ****, but if you must get it, make sure you get the real deal and not some low weight stuff. The guy I bought my car from used sparkly, but too thin, material for my int. and it stretched immediately, I junked it all .
FYI you can get a [IMG] discount coupon for Joanns by signing up for their website, and they also appear on the homepage. Or at least that's how it worked when I ordered my stuff a year ago.

that MDF roof bow trick is pretty sweet! I wish it were as easy for my '51 shoebox. Maybe I can use a band saw to get the right curve in it to fit the shape of my roof?!? Good excuse to buy a band saw and try!!!! :D

A nice looking headliner with bows really separates the men from the boys on chopped cars! I was just going to throw something up there to cover the roof and call it done.

    Fabric.com
Has "sparkle vinyl" or "glitter vinyl". Its not Zodiac vinyl but ive ordered from them and theres really not much difference in the two. Its $15.98 /yd and free shipping over $35.
And if your going to sew pleats and such in it, try yourautotrim.com for the "sew foam" or "quilting foam" youll need to back up the material.

Cheb, Too late on the info... But I will hang onto it for sure. I'm not doing the work. I have a 40 year vet for the job. 1st part I have not done myself. He bought Zodiac localy for $35...

As for the comfort, he is using a softer checkerd parten vinyl that he suggested. I told him I wanted "his" ideas anfter I showed him a few pics of what I was after. He is adding memory foam to the top of the 2" HD foam for the seats... He said it will help keep the material looking better longet etc.

We are doing 2" pleats from left to right for the headliner... He is looking for "sparkle" carpet to keep the theam...

I'll update when he brings over the 1st panel...

I guess we over spent by $100... But it was local & on hand, so he has started sewing... Never thought about the salvage yard for a head liner. We are going to glue it to the roof and make panels for the sides.

Check out fellow H.A.M.B.'er skips***ch. He did a complete walk-through in building your own headliner without using bows. He truly is a genius with interiors and not afraid to share his knowledge. I found his thread under headliner installation.

I promissed an update... Rick brought buy one of the smaller panels and picked up on of the seats... He is using a black leather for piping too.

As severial have mentioned... the overal oppenion is that this type of vinyl is uncomforatable to sit on... Rick mentioned this as well ad sugested a black and silver hounds tooth/ metalic checker board material that will go only in the seat centers...

Ha ha. I can't tell if you're being facetious , but for the 50's it doesn't sound to far off.
